Engineering Lab Technician

We are looking for a dynamic individual to join our Engineering team. As an Engineering Lab Technician, you will play a key role in supporting the development, testing, and continuous improvement of Nix's industry-leading colour measurement solutions. Working closely with our Engineering and R&D teams, you will collect and analyze technical data, maintain and operate laboratory equipment, assist with device prototyping, and help ensure the accuracy and reliability of product testing. What will you do?
Data Collection & Analysis
- Preparation and digitization of colour swatches and samples.
- Conduct tests as outlined by the engineering team using various spectral devices and test equipment.
- Accurately collect, organize, and maintain large datasets using Excel, MATLAB, and other engineering software applications.
- Document, summarize, and communicate test results to the engineering team.
- Analyze testing results and identify patterns, anomalies, and opportunities for product improvement.
- Prepare summaries and reports that communicate findings and recommendations to the Engineering team.
Device Prototyping
- Support rapid prototyping activities (e.g., 3D printing) for new product and device designs.
- Assist with assembly, troubleshooting, and physical/electrical testing of prototype devices under direction of the Engineering team.
- Assist with CAD model review and modifications to support prototype development and testing activities.
- Document prototype builds, testing procedures, and results.
Administrative Support
- Maintaining laboratory test equipment and performing regular maintenance and calibration activities.
- Maintain regular communication with suppliers, vendors, and other contacts to ensure databases are current and accurate.
- Manage phone and email correspondence to gather and verify information from key stakeholders.
- Assist with documentation, reporting, and other administrative tasks as needed.
- Maintain calibration records and equipment logs to ensure testing accuracy and compliance with internal standards.
General Responsibilities
- Take initiative to identify areas for improvement and contribute to a culture of continuous learning and development.
- Other duties as necessary to support the Engineering and R&D team.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to testing processes, data collection methods, and laboratory operations.
What will you need?
Education & Experience
- Post-secondary education in engineering technology, electronics, mechatronics, engineering, or a related technical field is preferred.
Technical Skills
- Hands-on experience with laboratory test equipment (multimeters, oscilloscopes).
- Experience operating and maintaining spectral devices or similar testing equipment is preferred.
- Familiarity with CAD software (Fusion 360) and rapid prototyping technologies such as 3D printing.
- Hands-on experience with computer programming and scripting is an asset (Arduino, MATLAB, Python, etc.)
Data Management & Analytical Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data collection, analysis, and managing large datasets.
- Proficient with Office suite tools (e.g., Word and PowerPoint) for report creation.
- Experience collecting, organizing, and analyzing large amounts of technical or operational data.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to identify trends and provide actionable insights.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy, documentation, and quality standards.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently while effectively managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with engineering teams and external contacts.
- Comfortable making phone calls and maintaining professional relationships to ensure up-to-date records.
Problem-Solving & Adaptability
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address engineering challenges.
- Ability to adapt to shifting priorities and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
Physical Ability
- Capability to perform hands-on tasks in a technical environment, with the ability to handle small tools and components while maintaining focus and precision.
