About the role
We are hiring a Technology Principal to become one of the investment team's senior technical voices. This is a technology-first investing role for a graduate-trained technologist or researcher with deep technical expertise, not a traditional finance-first Principal role.
You will evaluate the technology behind prospective investments, pressure-test technical claims, assess differentiation and defensibility, and translate your findings into clear investment judgment. Prior experience and education in the field of AI and machine learning, distributed systems, compute, data infrastructure, cloud, security and other emerging technologies is required.
You will work directly with founders, CTOs, researchers and the investment team, often forming a view on complex technology before the market has reached consensus.
Responsibilities
- Lead technical diligence across architecture, models, data, infrastructure, performance, scalability, security, reliability, cost structure and engineering quality.
- Assess technical differentiation and defensibility, separating durable technology advantages from claims that can be replicated or competed away.
- Translate technical findings into decision-ready investment recommendations, including key risks, upside cases and business implications.
- Develop the investment thesis across AI infrastructure, frontier and applied AI, developer tooling, digital infrastructure, cybersecurity and adjacent emerging technologies.
- Engage directly with founders, CTOs, engineering leaders, researchers, customers and subject-matter experts.
- Track frontier technology trends and contribute selectively to the management company’s portfolio technical strategy, skills and qualifications.
- Graduate-level training in the selected fields of either computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, AI/ML is desired. Candidates completing a research-intensive graduate program in the desired fields with substantive research or hands-on technical experience in AI/ML systems, software engineering, distributed systems, infrastructure, data platforms, cloud, semiconductors/compute, cybersecurity or a related area will also be considered.
- Ability to decipher what is happening underneath the product: system design, engineering choices, experimental methodology, benchmarks, bottlenecks, scalability and technical debt.
- Strong research judgment and first-principles thinking, with the ability to investigate unfamiliar technical domains, challenge assumptions and form an independent point of view.
- Exceptional professional command of written and spoken English, with the ability to explain complex technical ideas clearly and persuasively to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Commercial curiosity and a genuine interest in investing and company-building. Prior venture capital or finance experience is a plus and not required.
Who may be especially well suited
Strong candidates may come from a university research group, AI or systems lab, frontier technology company or another research-intensive environment. Profiles may include graduate-level researchers, ML or AI researchers, research engineers, systems researchers or engineers with advanced academic training who want to apply their technical expertise to investing.
Note: This posting is for an existing job vacancy. Some steps in the resume screening process may use AI-assisted tools to help identify qualified candidates. All applications will be reviewed fairly and in compliance with the Employment Standards Act (ESA).
