Primary Responsibilities
The Damage Prevention Technician (DPT) is responsible for accurately locating and marking underground utilities within a designated area. This includes providing detailed sketches of the located area to the requester. Using company-provided equipment, DPTs will identify utilities such as gas, water, sewer, fiber optic cables, and electrical lines, mark them using spray paint or flags, and document the findings. Other duties include but are not limited to:
- Complete Locates: Use electronic devices, including a receiver wand and transmitter, to locate and verify underground utilities accurately and independently.
- Marking and Documentation: Mark utilities and create detailed drawings/sketches of the located area. Prepare accurate reports and documentation verifying marked utilities.
- Health and Safety: Work in compliance with all health, safety, and environmental legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act and company policies. Employ a safety-first mindset when engaging with customers and communities.
- Stakeholder Consultation: Collaborate with contractors, developers, builders, and other stakeholders regarding the location of underground utilities.
- Equipment Management: Ensure the safeguarding and proper use of company equipment and vehicles.
- On-Call Support: Participate in a mandatory on-call rotation shared between the two full-time locators, including responding to after-hours locate requests within the required response time.
- Overtime: Work overtime as required to meet operational and customer service needs.
- Service Area Coverage: Travel throughout the assigned Whitecourt service area and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Operational Coverage: Provide coverage for vacation, illness, overlapping callouts, and other operational requirements as needed.
Successful candidates will have the following requirements:
- Valid AB Class 5 Driver’s License and clean three (3) year Driver’s Abstract, as this position includes a company vehicle for business purposes only
- Minimum three (3) years of utility locate experience
- Current ALP Locator certification
- Utility Safety Partners (USP) endorsed Locate & Marking certification
- USP endorsed Ground Disturbance Level II Certification
- Ability to perform utility locates independently and complete accurate sketches and documentation
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and meet required response times
- Availability for full-time work, including weekends, overtime, and a mandatory on-call rotation shared between the two locators
- Ability to respond to after-hours call-outs within the required response time and provide coverage as needed for vacation, illness, and overlapping call-outs
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and travel throughout the assigned Whitecourt service area
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including walking on uneven terrain, lifting and carrying equipment up to 9 kg (20 lbs.), and frequently bending, twisting, squatting, or kneeling
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Strong computer skills and ability to interact effectively with internal and external stakeholders
- Clean criminal background check
- Ability to start immediately is an asset
