Who We Are
Metrolinx’s GO Expansion program is delivering more GO service across the network, including the capacity to deliver two-way service every 15 minutes or better on core routes. Work is already underway on new track, station renovations and infrastructure upgrades on parts of the Lakeshore, Stouffville, Kitchener and Barrie lines. The investment will generate thousands of new jobs and economic opportunities across the region. The ONxpress Civil Joint Venture is comprised of Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc. and FCC Canada Ltd. This multidisciplinary team leads the delivery of civil and track works, leveraging global expertise to introduce innovative solutions across the GO Transit network.
What You'll Do
The Material Manager leads the planning, receipt, storage, preservation, control and distribution of construction materials across project material yards, laydown areas and work fronts. The role is accountable for material availability, inventory accuracy, yard organization, logistics coordination, traceability, cost control and safe material-handling practices, with particular focus on rail and track materials used in a complex, multi-contractor delivery environment.
- Provide overall leadership for material management activities across project yards, warehouses, laydown areas, satellite storage locations and active work fronts.
- Develop and maintain the project material management plan, including receiving, inspection, identification, storage, preservation, inventory control, kitting, issue, transfer, return and disposal processes.
- Plan material yard layouts, storage zones, traffic routes, lifting areas, quarantine locations and controlled-access areas to support safe handling, efficient retrieval and future construction sequencing.
- Coordinate forecast demand, procurement status, delivery schedules and installation priorities with Construction, Track, Logistics, Procurement, Engineering, Quality, Commercial and Planning teams.
- Manage the receipt and verification of materials against purchase orders, packing lists, delivery tickets, specifications and inspection requirements, and promptly resolve shortages, damage, non-conformance or documentation gaps.
- Maintain accurate inventory and chain-of-custody records for project materials, including lot, heat, batch, serial or asset identifiers where traceability is required.
- Ensure appropriate storage, protection and preservation of rail, track and civil materials, including rail, turnouts, ties, fasteners, insulated joints, drainage products, cable, precast elements and other long-lead or sensitive items.
- Establish material status controls for accepted, pending inspection, quarantined, non-conforming, surplus, returned and scrap materials, with clear physical identification and system records.
- Coordinate unloading, internal movements, loading and final-mile delivery using approved lifting plans, competent operators and suitable cranes, forklifts, loaders, trucks or specialized rail-material handling equipment.
- Align material release, picking, kitting and delivery with short-interval plans, work packages, possession requirements and site access constraints to prevent disruption to field production.
- Lead cycle counts, stock reconciliations and periodic audits; investigate variances and implement corrective actions to protect inventory accuracy and project cost.
- Monitor material consumption, waste, surplus, obsolescence and damaged stock, and support recovery, reallocation, return-to-vendor or approved disposal strategies.
- Manage material yard personnel and service providers, including onboarding, daily coordination, competency verification, work allocation, coaching and performance follow-up.
- Provide clear dashboards, shortage reports, delivery forecasts, risk updates and escalation of critical material constraints to project leadership and affected work-package owners.
- Champion continuous improvement in yard organization, visual controls, digital inventory practices, handling methods and material flow across the project.
- Set and adjust material priorities based on the construction sequence, work-package demand, available inventory, delivery constraints, yard capacity and approved project priorities.
- Stop or reject unsafe unloading, lifting, storage or transport activities, and quarantine damaged, unidentified or non-conforming materials pending formal disposition.
- Control the release, transfer and allocation of project materials in accordance with approved authorization, traceability and documentation requirements.
- Escalate shortages, late deliveries, inventory variances, storage constraints and competing material demands with impact analysis and recommended recovery actions.
What You Bring:
- 5–10 years of experience in materials management, procurement, logistics, or project coordination roles within railway, transit, civil, or large infrastructure construction projects.
- Progressive experience in construction material management, warehousing, logistics or supply-chain operations, including direct responsibility for material yards or large laydown areas.
- Demonstrated experience managing receiving, storage, preservation, inventory, traceability, material issue and field distribution in a complex project environment.
- Railway, transit, trackwork or heavy civil construction experience is strongly preferred, including familiarity with rail and track materials and the constraints of active railway or possession-based work.
- Strong knowledge of safe material handling, lifting and rigging interfaces, yard traffic management, storage planning and environmental controls for outdoor materials.
- Proven ability to coordinate suppliers, subcontractors, transport providers, quality inspectors and multiple construction teams while managing changing priorities.
- Experience with inventory audits, shortage management, material reconciliation, surplus control and cost-conscious decision-making.
- College diploma or university degree in supply chain, logistics, construction management, engineering, business or a related discipline is preferred; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
- Valid driver’s licence required. Relevant equipment, lifting, hazardous-material or railway-access training is considered an asset.
- Progressive experience in construction material management, warehousing, logistics or supply-chain operations, including direct responsibility for material yards or large laydown areas.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel, material registers, inventory dashboards, document-control systems and enterprise resource planning or warehouse-management applications. Experience with SAP or comparable procurement and inventory platforms, barcode or QR-code tracking, and digital reporting tools is an asset.
- Ability to work a primarily day-shift schedule with flexibility for early deliveries, nights, weekends or urgent material requirements when project activities demand.
- Work is performed in offices, warehouses, outdoor material yards, laydown areas and active construction or railway environments and requires regular field presence, walking on uneven ground, situational awareness and compliance with site access and personal protective equipment requirements.
- The role requires periodic travel between project yards, supplier locations and work fronts, and may involve exposure to weather, noise, dust and moving vehicles or equipment.
