Position Overview
Reporting to the Director, Benefit Systems, the Data & Business Intelligence Architect will play a key role in developing and maintaining the organization's data strategy, architecture, governance framework, and business intelligence environment. The Position will analyze existing spreadsheets, databases, applications, and reporting processes to design scalable data structures, establish governance standards, define security and access controls, and create reliable reporting and analytics solutions.
The Position serves as the bridge between business operations and technology by translating organizational requirements into data models, dashboards, user stories, reporting standards, and application development requirements. The Position is accountable for ensuring data integrity, data security, regulatory compliance, system scalability, and effective data management practices across the organization.
Work Requirements
This posting is for one (1) full-time, six (6) month contractual position based in the Edmonton office. The regular hours of work for this position is Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Job Responsibilities
- Support the development and execution of the organization's data strategy, architecture, and governance framework, ensuring alignment with business objectives, scalability requirements, and future data growth.
- Assess, design, and maintain enterprise data models, database structures, data warehouses, integrations, and information architecture frameworks that support operational efficiency, reporting, analytics, and application development.
- Establish and maintain data governance, stewardship, privacy, security, classification, retention, lifecycle management, and access control standards, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, organizational policies, and industry best practices.
- Develop and oversee data anonymization, de-identification, confidentiality, and secure data-sharing practices to protect sensitive information while supporting reporting, analytics, testing, and business operations.
- Design and implement business intelligence solutions, including dashboards, scorecards, KPI frameworks, reporting standards, and data visualization best practices that support data-driven decision-making.
- Partner with business stakeholders to gather requirements, define metrics, develop user stories and technical specifications, and translate business needs into scalable data, reporting, and technology solutions.
- Oversee data quality, validation, auditing, migration, integration, transformation, and ETL processes to ensure the accuracy, consistency, integrity, and reliability of organizational data.
- Develop and maintain data dictionaries, metadata repositories, business glossaries, data lineage documentation, technical standards, and system documentation.
- Evaluate existing systems, databases, reporting platforms, and technologies, recommending improvements that enhance performance, usability, scalability, maintainability, and long-term sustainability.
- Forecast future data storage, capacity, reporting, infrastructure, and business intelligence requirements, developing strategies that support organizational growth and evolving business needs.
- Lead data-related projects and collaborate with internal stakeholders, technical teams, and vendors to support reporting initiatives, system enhancements, digital transformation projects, and application and web development efforts.
- Monitor and optimize database, cloud storage, software licensing, and analytics platform costs, while supporting technology procurement, vendor management, and business case development.
- Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to technical teams and promote a culture of data governance, privacy, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Data Science, Business Intelligence, Information Management, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Five (5) to eight (8) years of progressive experience in data architecture, database management, business intelligence, analytics, data governance, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing enterprise data models, database structures, data warehouses, business intelligence platforms, and reporting solutions.
- Strong expertise in SQL, relational database management systems, data modelling, data architecture principles, ETL processes, data integration, migration, and automation.
- Extensive experience with Power BI or similar business intelligence platforms, including dashboard development, KPI reporting, analytics, and data visualization.
- Experience developing and administering data governance frameworks, stewardship models, policies, standards, controls, and best practices.
- Strong understanding of privacy legislation, information security, cybersecurity principles, data classification, role-based security, confidentiality requirements, and secure data-sharing practices.
- Experience implementing data anonymization, de-identification, masking methodologies, and privacy-preserving techniques used to protect sensitive information while supporting reporting and analytics.
- Knowledge of master data management, metadata management, data lineage, data quality management, retention practices, lifecycle management, capacity planning, and scalable data growth strategies.
- Experience gathering business requirements, developing user stories and technical specifications, and translating business needs into technology solutions.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Fabric, Microsoft SQL Server, cloud data platforms, analytics environments, and enterprise reporting technologies.
- Strong analytical, strategic thinking, problem-solving, project management, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and collaborate effectively.
- Experience with vendor management, software procurement, budget planning, and technology cost optimization is considered an asset.
