ABOUT OUR COLLECTIVE JOURNEY
Our Collective Journey began in 2020 with a conversation between two friends in a Medicine Hat garage. Both had firsthand experience with Alberta’s recovery system and understood how easily people could fall through its gaps. They believed no one should have to find their way forward alone, and they decided to do something about it.
Today, OCJ is a growing nonprofit organization providing free, personalized recovery and resiliency support grounded in evidence, connection and lived experience. Our work includes recovery coaching, youth resiliency coaching, Pathways to Recovery community meetings, presentations, the From Darkness to Life podcast and partnerships with schools and community organizations.
We also spearhead some of southeastern Alberta’s most meaningful community events, including SARRCon and the Rise Up Hot Air Balloon Festival.
WHY JOIN THE OCJ BOARD?
Being part of the OCJ Board of Directors is an opportunity to help guide an organization that is filling real gaps in our community.
Board members help shape OCJ’s direction, provide responsible governance and ensure the organization remains focused on its mission as it continues to grow. The role also gives you the opportunity to see the impact of that work beyond the boardroom by attending programs, supporting community initiatives and taking part in events that create connection, build resilience and encourage hope.
This is a chance to contribute your experience and perspective to work that has a direct and visible impact on individuals, families and communities.
THE COMMITMENT
The average time commitment is approximately four hours per month. Board meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. at the OCJ office in Medicine Hat. In-person attendance is preferred, although virtual participation may be available when needed.
Each board member also participates in at least one committee. Board members are expected to actively participate in committee work based on organizational needs, interests and areas of expertise.
Board members are also expected to attend the Annual General Meeting, take part in at least one OCJ program each year and support OCJ fundraisers and events when possible.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING
We are looking for people who:
- Believe in OCJ’s mission and want to help strengthen recovery, resilience and connection in our communities
- Are willing to prepare for meetings, participate in discussions and follow through on commitments
- Can offer thoughtful, respectful and independent perspectives
- Understand the importance of confidentiality, accountability and responsible nonprofit governance
- Are interested in learning more about OCJ’s programs and the people and communities we serve
- Work well with others and are comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas and contributing to group decisions
Previous board experience is welcome, but it is not required. We value people with different professional backgrounds, community connections and life experiences. You do not need to have personal experience with recovery to contribute meaningfully to OCJ’s work. The Board provides governance and strategic oversight and accountability, while the Executive Director and staff are responsible for the day-to-day operations of OCJ.
WHAT YOU WILL GAIN
Serving on the OCJ board is an opportunity to build governance and leadership experience, connect with people across the community and contribute to the continued growth and impact of a community based organization. More importantly, you will help ensure that people facing difficult moments have access to meaningful support and do not have to find their way forward alone.
