Paracel Laboratories Ltd. is a full-service environmental and Indoor Air Quality laboratory. Our main laboratory facilities are located in Ottawa and are supported by an environmental laboratory in Hamilton, as well as microbiology and asbestos laboratories in Mississauga and Calgary. Additional service depots are located in Kingston, London, Niagara, Windsor, and Richmond Hill.
We support a broad spectrum of projects for professional clients across Canada and around the world. Our client base primarily consists of major environmental consultants, all levels of government, and industrial manufacturers located predominantly in Ottawa, Toronto, Niagara, Eastern Ontario, and Southwestern Ontario.
The Opportunity
Paracel Laboratories is looking for an Asbestos Analyst to join our team in Ottawa (West). The ideal candidate for this role is detail-oriented, dexterous, and driven to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
The Laboratory Analyst is responsible for the analysis of asbestos using polarized light microscopy (PLM) and/or phase contrast microscopy (PCM). The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Department Supervisor.
This is a full-time, permanent position.
Compensation
This position offers a salary range of $18.50–$21.00 per hour, commensurate with experience. The compensation package includes full benefits, an Employee and Family Assistance Program, a Group RRSP plan, and a Profit-Sharing Program.
Location
This role is on-site, at 25 Northside Rd, Unit C, Nepean, Ontario, K2S 8H1.
Key Responsibilities
- Preparation, detection, identification, and quantification of materials for the presence of asbestos using visual estimation of asbestos and non-asbestos materials and their properties by PLM.
- Preparation and analysis of asbestos air samples by PCM.
- Use computers to manage workflow and perform data entry.
- Coordinate sample analyses and data review of incoming samples based on priority and turnaround times.
- Perform extended periods of microscope work.
- Maintain the QA/QC Program and follow Standard Operating Procedures.
- Assist with daily laboratory operations, including maintenance, calibration, stocking, and cleaning.
- Extended workdays and weekends may occasionally be required.
Qualifications
- Applicant must be able to distinguish colours to perform analysis.
- College Diploma or suitable Bachelor’s Degree in Science. Biotechnology, Geology, or Biology would be an asset.
- Knowledge of, or some exposure to, asbestos characterization using polarized light microscopy and/or phase contrast microscopy in a production laboratory is desired.
- Superb attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to effectively follow and interpret work instructions, methods, and procedures.
- High degree of manual dexterity.
- Highly reliable and deadline-driven.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with Quality Assurance (QA), Quality Control (QC), and ISO 17025 would be ideal.
- Understanding of good laboratory practices.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proven computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
