About the Opportunity
A national general contractor has brought a Chief Estimator back into its Calgary office, someone who has already built and handed over estimating teams in several of the company’s other regions. His mandate here is the same one he’s executed before: raise the standard of the department, and build the people who will eventually run it. This role exists because of that mandate, not because of a vacancy.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Own bids end to end, from strategy through close, rather than being handed a takeoff package and a deadline
- Report directly to the Chief Estimator, with no layer between you and the person setting the number
- Sit in on the go/no-go calls, not just the pricing that follows them
- Work a mixed pursuit diet across buildings: selective lump sum, construction management, design build, and collaborative contract models
- Be developed deliberately, with a view to leading pursuits and eventually a team
About You
The successful candidate will have the following:
- You’ve priced Calgary-area buildings work and you know which subtrades are currently reliable and which aren’t
- You can defend your number in a room with operations and ownership without getting talked off it
- You’ve carried a pursuit where the hard part was the strategy, not the arithmetic, and it was yours to own
- You want to be coached by someone better than you, and you’re honest enough to say so
- You’re done being the department that only gets a phone call when the bid comes in high
About the Job
This search is confidential. Beyond the compensation, here’s what’s on offer:
- A Chief Estimator who has built successors elsewhere and intends to build one here
- A department the business treats as a core capability, not an overhead line
- A real answer to “what’s next,” with a defined path rather than a vague one
- A group where the pressure is real and the room is still one you want to be in
- Salary Range: $120,000 to $150,000 + Bonus
