About the Opportunity
An exciting opportunity is available for a Civil Project Engineer to join the Capital Projects team supporting one of Canada’s largest gold mining operations. This is an independent contractor opportunity, with a target start date of approximately mid-October 2026.
Reporting directly to the Senior Civil Project Engineer (Lead), this is an intermediate-to-senior level position focused on supporting the planning, coordination, and execution of civil capital projects within an operating mining environment.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Lead Civil Project Engineer, engineering consultants, contractors, and multidisciplinary project teams to deliver assigned civil projects safely, on schedule, and within budget.
This is an individual contributor position with no direct reports or people-management responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Senior Civil Project Engineer (Lead) in the planning and execution of civil capital projects.
- Manage and coordinate assigned civil projects and work packages from engineering through construction, commissioning, and closeout.
- Coordinate engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and project closeout activities for assigned projects.
- Work closely with external engineering consultants and contractors and coordinate engineering deliverables.
- Review engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, scopes of work, and technical documentation.
- Coordinate with construction, operations, maintenance, procurement, environmental, and project controls teams.
- Support the development of project execution plans, work breakdown structures (WBS), schedules, budgets, and forecasts.
- Monitor project scope, schedule, cost, progress, and key deliverables.
- Work closely with Project Controls and Cost Control personnel to support schedule and budget compliance.
- Identify project risks and support the development and implementation of mitigation strategies.
- Support procurement activities, including scope development, technical bid evaluations, contractor selection, and contract administration.
- Coordinate and monitor contractor and consultant activities throughout project execution.
- Participate in constructability reviews, design reviews, value engineering initiatives, and project risk assessments.
- Provide technical support during construction and assist in resolving field engineering issues.
- Support commissioning, turnover, documentation, and project closeout activities.
- Ensure assigned work complies with applicable Ontario regulations, mining standards, engineering best practices, and site safety requirements.
- Provide regular project updates and escalate significant technical, schedule, cost, or execution concerns to the Lead Civil Project Engineer.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Minimum 8–9 years of relevant engineering/project experience within a mining environment.
- Mining experience is required for this position.
- Experience supporting civil capital projects within operating mines, mine expansions, process plants, or other mining infrastructure.
- Valid Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada.
- Experience supporting projects through engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and closeout.
- Strong understanding of civil infrastructure associated with mining operations.
- Experience coordinating engineering consultants, contractors, and multidisciplinary project stakeholders.
- Experience reviewing engineering drawings, specifications, scopes of work, calculations, and technical deliverables.
- Demonstrated understanding of project scope, schedule, cost, risk, change management, and contractor coordination.
- Experience working with EPC/EPCM contractors and engineering consultants in a mining environment.
- Strong communication, coordination, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary Capital Projects team.
- Experience working at operating or remote mine sites is considered a strong asset.
Preferred Experience
- Gold mining experience.
- Mining process plant construction or expansion projects.
- Brownfield and operating mine environments.
- Mine infrastructure and site civil works.
- EPC/EPCM project delivery.
- Experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D, Navisworks, and related engineering software.
Hybrid Rotation:
Phase 1 (2026 and 2027) – Sudbury Office and work from home (3-week rotation)
(Weeks 1 & 2)
-Work in downtown Sudbury: Monday to Thursday (Approximately 10–11 hours per day)
-Friday to Sunday: Days off.
(Week 3):
-Work from home: Monday to Friday. Approximately 10–11 hours per day.
Phase 2 (currently anticipated to be in 2028) – Mine site and work from home
(Week 1 and Week 3)
-Work at the mine site: Monday to Thursday. Approximately 10-11 hours per day
(Week 2 and Week 4)
-Work from home: Monday to Thursday and potentially Friday (2 hours).
