Construction Resident Engineer – Civil
Location: Detour Lake Mine, Northern Ontario (rotations start and end in Timmins)
Rotation: 14 days on / 14 days off, 12-hour days, cross-shifting with a counterpart
Reporting: The Construction Superintendent, working day to day with the site construction lead
Start: Approximately one month (start date to be finalized)
Engagement: Contract, hourly
The role
A leading gold producer is expanding its site construction team at Detour Lake and is seeking a Civil Resident Engineer. This is an owner-side field role that combines resident engineering, project management and construction management. It sits between the owner’s engineering team and its general contractors.
You will interpret drawings, make practical constructability decisions in the field, and take ownership of budget and scope for your work packages. This is not a design role: you resolve issues on site with contractors and send design changes back to engineering. You will be supported by a wider site and engineering team.
Key responsibilities
- Provide on-site civil engineering support across construction activities, resolving field issues with contractors.
- Supervise installation, including prefabricated buildings, and anticipate constructability problems before they arise.
- Respond to contractor RFIs and hold contractors to the agreed scope.
- Manage the package budget and scope handed over from engineering, assessing contractor requests for additional costs and making in-scope and out-of-scope calls.
- Manage scope and field changes, submitting them to engineering for approval and budget adjustment.
- Monitor contractor schedules and cash flow against plan.
- Maintain thorough crossover notes and lead a short handover call at each rotation change.
What you will bring
- Professional Engineer licence (P.Eng.) in Ontario or another Canadian province or territory.
- Site-based resident or field engineering experience on capital projects in mining or heavy industrial construction.
- Experience directing contractor crews and making field decisions without returning to the office.
- Strength across core civil scopes; prefab and building envelope experience is an advantage, not a requirement.
- Working knowledge of cost control and contract or change management, including package budgets and change orders.
- Comfort with remote site life, 12-hour days and a 14/14 rotation.
Rotation and travel
Day 0 is travel to Timmins, including a 30–60 minute crossover call with your counterpart. Day 1 is the first full working day on site at Detour. Day 14 is the final site day, with return travel to Timmins. Travel time is compensated, and the working day begins on site.
