The Opportunity:
The Ottawa Citizen/Sun is seeking a Senior Editor, Audience to lead digital production and audience engagement strategy in the newsroom, working with a team of direct reports, and the newsroom at large.
This management role will reimagine how the team brings stories to the community, and how readers in turn can connect with the newsroom. They will support key content pillars by developing and executing innovative journalism formats including vertical video, newsletters, video opinion content, visual journalism and interactive reader experiences both online and in real life.
The successful candidate will bring excellent people skills, news judgment, digital strategy insights, strong organizational ability and the capacity to multi-task in a fast-paced virtual newsroom to this role.
With a focus on building reader engagement, loyalty and trust, the Senior Editor, Audience will encourage readers to connect more deeply with the Citizen's journalism, newsroom and mission
What You’ll Do:
- Lead digital production, workflow and audience strategy;
- Manage team of digital journalists, setting daily and long-term priorities;
- Perform management duties for direct reports including scheduling functions, timesheets, expense approvals and other administrative management tasks;
- Work with senior leadership on editorial strategy, special projects and innovation;
- Develop new digital-first opinion and community voice formats;
- Produce original journalism grounded in personal expertise including first-person pieces, opinion content, video and new digital content types;
- Lead reader engagement efforts, including events, Q&As, callouts and online experiences;
- Use audience data to launch franchises that support key strategic priorities and strengthen our connection with readers; and
- Work with reporters, editors, photographers and producers on projects that support the Citizen’s strategic initiatives and key content areas.
Who You Are:
- An experienced digital journalist and newsroom leader with a background in a daily, deadline-oriented news environment;
- Skilled at managing teams, workflow and audience strategy;
- Highly skilled in news judgment, editing, assigning, coaching and quickly adapting to breaking news and evolving situations;
- Strong understanding of digital news production including newsletters, social platforms, video content, data visualization, performance analytics and reader engagement;
- Knowledgeable about CP style, journalistic ethics and relevant legal issues;
- Creative, collaborative and passionate about building community around local journalism.
Compensation:
Employment offers presented to the selected candidate are based on a combination of qualifications, experience, responsibilities of the role and the candidate's location.
Base Salary: $79,001 - $92,000
