Our Client is an established technology and systems integration organization supporting commercial, institutional, industrial, and enterprise environments.
Our Client is seeking an experienced Controls Specialist – QA/QC to support the technical assessment and quality review of Building Automation System (BAS) infrastructure as part of a large-scale controls and system migration initiative.
The role will lead and support detailed reviews of BACnet networks, controllers, devices, communications, routing, addressing, and overall network health across a campus-wide environment, including systems associated with Edge Servers and connected building automation infrastructure.
The Controls Specialist will identify technical issues that could affect migration, system stability, interoperability, or performance and will document findings and recommendations to help establish migration readiness.
This position is best suited to someone with strong hands-on experience in Building Automation Systems, BACnet networking, controls integration, commissioning, troubleshooting, or BAS quality assurance.
What You’ll Do
- Lead and support technical reviews of existing Building Automation System infrastructure across multiple facilities and systems.
- Assess BACnet/IP and BACnet MS/TP networks for communication performance, configuration, reliability, and migration readiness.
- Review BACnet device addressing, device instances, network numbering, and related configuration.
- Identify duplicate or conflicting device instances, addresses, network numbers, or other configuration issues.
- Review BBMD configuration, BACnet routing, Foreign Device Registration, broadcast distribution, and network segmentation where applicable.
- Assess BACnet broadcast behaviour and identify conditions that may contribute to excessive network traffic, communication issues, or system instability.
- Review communication reliability between controllers, field devices, supervisory devices, servers, gateways, and other connected systems.
- Identify offline, intermittent, misconfigured, conflicting, or poorly communicating devices.
- Review MS/TP trunks for potential addressing, baud rate, token passing, wiring, termination, communication, or performance issues.
- Assess Edge Server connectivity and associated BAS network architecture.
- Identify technical dependencies, risks, and network conditions that could affect system migration or integration.
- Validate existing system information against field conditions, available drawings, databases, network records, controller information, and other project documentation.
- Support QA/QC reviews of controls installations, configurations, network changes, and migration activities.
- Verify that completed work aligns with project requirements, approved designs, applicable standards, and established controls practices.
- Perform or support functional and communication checks before and after migration activities.
- Assist in identifying deficiencies and tracking corrective actions through resolution.
- Work with project teams, controls technicians, engineers, integrators, vendors, and other stakeholders to investigate and resolve technical issues.
- Support troubleshooting of BAS communication and integration issues across different equipment, controllers, manufacturers, and network architectures.
- Prepare clear technical findings, deficiency reports, assessment results, and recommendations.
- Maintain QA/QC records, technical documentation, issue logs, test results, and supporting evidence.
- Contribute to migration readiness reports and help determine whether systems or network segments are ready to proceed.
- Support project closeout by confirming identified deficiencies and technical issues have been addressed or appropriately documented.
- Follow applicable project, site, health and safety, and quality requirements.
What We’re Looking For
The ideal candidate brings substantial experience working directly with Building Automation Systems and BACnet-based controls networks.
Candidates should have:
- Strong working knowledge of BACnet/IP and BACnet MS/TP.
- Experience reviewing, configuring, commissioning, or troubleshooting BAS networks.
- Strong understanding of BACnet devices, device instances, network addressing, routing, and communications.
- Understanding of BBMDs, BACnet broadcasts, routing, network segmentation, and related BACnet networking concepts.
- Experience identifying duplicate devices, communication conflicts, network instability, intermittent communications, and configuration issues.
- Experience troubleshooting controllers, supervisory devices, field-level networks, gateways, and related BAS infrastructure.
- Ability to interpret BAS architecture diagrams, network drawings, control drawings, points lists, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to distinguish between field-device, controller, network, server, configuration, and integration-related issues.
- Experience conducting system assessments, technical audits, commissioning, retro-commissioning, or QA/QC reviews.
- Ability to document technical findings clearly and provide practical recommendations.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work methodically across large numbers of devices and systems.
- Ability to work independently while coordinating with larger technical and project teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Experience
Experience with one or more of the following would be considered an asset:
- Large commercial, institutional, healthcare, Data Centre, campus, or multi-building BAS environments.
- BAS migration, modernization, or system replacement projects.
- Integration of multiple BAS manufacturers or legacy control systems.
- Edge Servers, supervisory controllers, automation servers, or similar BAS supervisory architecture.
- Niagara Framework / Niagara N4.
- BACnet gateways and third-party system integrations.
- IP networking as it relates to BAS environments.
- Controls commissioning and functional performance testing.
- Controls retrofits and brownfield projects.
- Network discovery, device inventories, system mapping, or migration-readiness assessments.
- QA/QC or technical verification responsibilities on controls projects.
Experience & Education
- Technical diploma, college education, engineering technology background, controls training, or equivalent relevant industry experience.
- Approximately 5+ years of hands-on Building Automation / Controls experience is preferred.
- Demonstrated BACnet troubleshooting and network assessment experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience supporting complex BAS integration, commissioning, migration, or modernization projects is highly preferred.
- More senior candidates should demonstrate the ability to independently assess complex controls networks, identify root causes, and provide technical direction or recommendations.

- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada without employer sponsorship.
- Must be able to attend customer and project sites as required.
- Must be comfortable working within active commercial, institutional, or technical facilities.
- Ability to travel within the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding regions as required.
- A valid driver’s licence may be required depending on project assignments.
