Reporting Relationships
As part of Potentia’s Growth team, the Project Manager reports to Julia Cushing, Director, Development & Origination, and has no direct reports.
Accountabilities and Key Functions
The Project Manager is responsible for the development of renewable energy generation (wind and solar) and energy storage projects. The Project Manager will identify risks and recommend strategic paths forward to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
Focusing on the Canadian renewable energy market, this position leads all aspects of project development including site prospecting, negotiation of commercial agreements, public consultation, permitting, working with subject matter experts such as environmental and technical advisors, communication with project partners, and preparation of proposals to source offtake opportunities (e.g. power purchase agreements). The position will also support due diligence efforts on acquisition opportunities throughout North America.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Development & Management
- Lead project management activities from project concept to the commencement of operations – coordinating internal and external functional teams, working proactively to identify project barriers and risks and implementing strategies to overcome them.
- Develop and maintain project budgets and schedules.
- Draft reports to management, including project status updates.
- Communicate information continuously and effectively to internal and external cross-functional teams.
- Contribute to best practices and documentation of lessons learned for future projects.
Site Origination, Land & Permitting
- Identify prospective sites with suitable resource, transmission capacity and favourable site characteristics.
- Lead land acquisition and coordination activities.
- Manage local, provincial/state and federal permitting.
- Initiate interconnection processes.
- Establish and manage relationships with key stakeholders.
Commercial, Offtake & Procurement
- Prepare proposals/bids submitted to potential offtakers.
- Participate in commercial negotiations, including Power Purchase Agreements, Indigenous partnerships, equipment supply contracts, early-stage project acquisition agreements and other commercial agreements.
- Work closely with the procurement team to select major equipment and set commercial terms.
- Support the financial analysis and modeling of the project by providing key inputs to the modeling team.
- Liaise with consultants, contractors and third parties.
Policy, Due Diligence & Acquisitions
- Participate in policy outreach efforts to governmental officials regarding industry issues, providing recommendations and feedback to the VP, Government Affairs.
- Carry out due diligence activities to identify risks and opportunities for potential acquisitions.
- Such other development activities as may reasonably be required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
Education
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in an environmental field, engineering, business or a related field.
- PMP designation is considered an asset.
Experience
- 4–6 years of experience in the renewable energy field, focused on development or development-related matters.
- Experience in Quebec and/or British Columbia is considered a strong asset.
Skills
- Good natured, dedicated team player able to work under pressure when required.
- High level of judgment – able to synthesize multiple data points, apply them to relevant problems and take decisive action.
- Strong project management, organizational and multi-tasking skills, with high attention to detail.
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel and Word).
- Self-motivated, curious, agile, professional and trustworthy.
- Passionate about renewable energy, energy storage and the environment.
- French language proficiency is considered an asset.
Minimum Requirements
- 4 years of experience in renewable energy development.
- Ability and willingness to travel.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Potentia does not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
COMPENSATION
- Base salary range: $100,000 – $130,000 CAD.
- Target annual bonus: 15% target bonus.
- Compensation will vary depending on experience and qualifications.
