Role Description The Associate Lawyer will work on a full-time, on-site basis at the Brandon, MB office, handling files under the supervision of senior counsel while progressively taking on greater responsibility. Day-to-day duties include meeting with clients, conducting legal research, drafting and reviewing contracts, pleadings, and other legal documents, and managing case files from intake through resolution. The role involves preparing for and attending court appearances, hearings, and negotiations, as well as participating in settlement discussions and alternative dispute resolution where appropriate. The Associate Lawyer will collaborate with colleagues and staff to ensure timely, accurate work, maintain clear and professional client communication, and uphold all ethical and regulatory obligations. The position also includes contributing to firm initiatives, participating in professional development, and assisting with business development activities such as community outreach and networking.
Qualifications
- Licensed to practice law (or eligibility for licensure) in Manitoba, with a law degree (JD or LLB) from an accredited institution.
- Strong legal research and analytical skills, including the ability to interpret statutes, case law, and regulations, and apply them to client matters.
- Proficiency in drafting, reviewing, and editing legal documents such as contracts, pleadings, correspondence, and legal opinions.
- Effective client service skills, including clear written and verbal communication, active listening, and the ability to explain complex legal concepts in accessible language.
- Organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple files, meet deadlines, and maintain accurate records and file notes.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a small firm environment while also managing tasks independently and exercising sound judgment.
- Comfort with courtroom or hearing procedures, negotiation, and advocacy, or a demonstrated interest and willingness to develop these skills.
- Professional ethics, discretion, and respect for confidentiality in all client and colleague interactions.
- Competence with standard office and legal practice software, including document management systems, research tools, and communication platforms.
- Prior experience (articling, clerkship, or practice) in litigation, family law, real estate, or general practice is an asset but not required.
