JOB CLASS: Machinist

Summary Of Function
The Machinist is responsible for the manufacture, modification, repair, and maintenance of precision components, tooling, fixtures, and mold components using conventional and CNC machining equipment. Working from engineering drawings, CAD models, and specifications, the Machinist ensures parts are produced accurately and efficiently to meet customer and internal requirements.
The Machinist supports mold manufacturing and repair activities while contributing to continuous improvement, quality objectives, and safe work practices. Mold making experience is considered a strong asset.
Major Duties And Responsibilities
- Set up and operate conventional and CNC machining equipment including milling machines, lathes, grinders, and EDM equipment as required.
- Manufacturing of precision components from engineering drawings, 3D CAD models, sketches, and specifications.
- Inspect completed workpieces to verify dimensions, tolerances, and quality standards.
- Perform modifications, repairs, and maintenance on tooling, fixtures, mold components, and production equipment.
- Assist with mold construction, mold repair, and mold improvement projects.
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and CAD-generated models.
- Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, machining parameters, and materials to achieve required results.
- Maintain accurate records of completed work and report any quality or process concerns.
- Perform routine machine maintenance and maintain a clean, organized work area.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on productivity, quality, cost reduction, and safety.
- Collaborate with Tool Room personnel, Engineers, Project Managers, and Production personnel to meet project deadlines and production requirements.
- Participate in training and development activities to enhance machining and technical skills.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Key Competencies
- CNC Machine Setup and Operation
- CNC Programming (Mastercam experience considered an asset)
- Blueprint and Technical Drawing Interpretation
- Precision Measuring Instruments (micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, etc.)
- CAD Software familiarity (KeyCreator, SolidWorks, or equivalent preferred)
- Strong Mechanical Aptitude
- Problem Solving and Troubleshooting
- Time Management
- Attention to Detail
- Organization and Planning
- Basic knowledge of ISO 9001:2015, AS9100D, and ISO 13485:2016 standards
Educational Requirements
- High school with trade school.
- Or equivalent experience as judged by the hiring manager to their satisfaction.
- Ability to read and understand 2D and 3D drawings (blueprints or electronic versions – on paper or an electronic viewer).
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of experience operating conventional and/or CNC machining equipment.
- Experience with CNC programming and setup is considered an asset.
- Mold making, mold repair, or tooling experience preferred.
- Experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred.
