The Executive Medical Director (EMD), Women’s Global Health, is accountable to the Chief Medical Officer, BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre for contribution to, and promotion of, the philosophies and goals of the Institute for Global Health.
The Executive Medical Director (EMD), Women’s Global Health will promote the vision and values of the women’s health campus, along with those of the Provincial Health Services Authority, at both a local and international level. The EMD leverages technology to promote worldwide sharing and exchange of knowledge including in the areas of education, innovation, knowledge translation, partnerships, collaboration, and research.
Specific Accountabilities
Medical Expertise
- Applies and evaluates standards, policies, practices, and procedures, creating and promoting an environment of best practice that encourages clinical excellence, clinical teaching and research.
- Builds capacity and assists in quality improvement in global health care.
Leadership
- Ensures clinical leaders are fully engaged and supported in strategic and operational activities within the realm of women’s global health as it relates to the work of the Institute for Global Health.
- Take an active leadership role locally, nationally and internationally, in advancing the care of women and their families in low- and middle-income countries.
- Works with the BC Women’s Health Foundation and other organizations, both governmental and non-governmental, to obtain resources to support the Institute for Global Health.
Research & Education
- Take a leadership role in research that advances our understanding of the strategies to improve maternal and newborn outcomes that are able to reach women in low- and middle-income countries.
- Provides mentorship and training to university undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate trainees in the area of global health with an emphasis on women.
Qualifications
This position requires membership in a regulated medical staff profession with current registration/licensure (or eligibility for registration/licensure) in British Columbia, and 5+ years of experience in a senior leadership role.

About BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre
BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre (BCW) is the only facility in British Columbia devoted primarily to the health of women, newborns and families. It provides specialized women’s health services that address the health needs of women of all ages and backgrounds. BC Women’s provides Ambulatory and Inpatient Services for women with substance use disorder. Advances and provincial expansion of service for this population is a strategic priority. As an academic health centre BCW’s mandate includes providing strong leadership in research and the education and professional development of health care professionals in areas related to the health of the populations we serve.
