Senior Backend / Enterprise Integration Architect
Proxylink is working with a public sector client to identify a highly experienced Senior Backend / Enterprise Integration Architect for a complex technology initiative. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and supporting highly available, enterprise-grade integration and backend solutions that align with business requirements, enterprise architecture standards, security policies, and technology best practices.
This is a 5-day onsite engagement and is well suited for a senior technology professional with extensive experience in backend development, enterprise integration, system architecture, and public-sector environments.
Position Overview
The successful candidate will undertake the design of hosting and technology solutions based on the client's service specifications, standards, policies, best practices, and cost models. The role will involve translating business and application requirements into scalable, secure, highly available technology solutions that support project and initiative deliverables.
The candidate will work closely with technical teams, business stakeholders, architects, and senior management to analyze requirements, design solutions, develop technical specifications, and provide guidance on both short- and long-term technology initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop complex, highly available, mission-critical backend and enterprise integration solutions.
- Analyze business and technical requirements and translate them into scalable technology solutions.
- Design hosting and technology solutions that align with enterprise standards, policies, architecture principles, and security requirements.
- Develop backend services and APIs using technologies such as REST, JPA, Hibernate, SQL, and PL/SQL.
- Design and implement enterprise integration solutions using integration patterns, middleware, APIs, message queues, and Enterprise Service Bus technologies.
- Design and develop integration solutions using the Spring Framework, particularly Spring Integration.
- Work with enterprise middleware and service bus technologies such as IBM App Connect Enterprise (ACE) and/or MuleSoft.
- Develop and integrate solutions using technologies such as JMS, AMQP, REST APIs, APIs, messaging platforms, and middleware within cloud environments, including Azure.
- Analyze existing systems to assess technical performance, capacity, scalability, reliability, and opportunities for modernization or improvement.
- Participate in the planning, migration, implementation, and ongoing support of large and complex technology initiatives.
- Gather and analyze client business requirements, information technology mandates, strategic plans, environmental standards, and architectural requirements.
- Develop technical specifications and documentation for the installation, integration, testing, performance, security, recovery, and operation of systems.
- Evaluate emerging technologies, industry trends, and new products to determine their applicability to the client's short- and long-term technology requirements.
- Provide technical advice and recommendations regarding solution development and technology service delivery.
- Conduct conceptual and analytical assessments, including cost/benefit analysis, to support technology planning and solution design.
- Collaborate with technical teams and business stakeholders to facilitate solution design and implementation.
- Lead technical discussions, provide mentorship to development teams, and support other developers as a Team Lead.
- Ensure project deliverables are completed within established timelines and organizational standards.
Required Technical Skills
Backend Development & Database – 30%
- 10+ years of experience in backend design and development.
- Strong experience developing REST Web Services.
- Strong hands-on experience with JPA and Hibernate.
- Strong knowledge of relational databases and experience with Oracle and/or SQL Server.
- Strong experience with SQL and PL/SQL.
- Experience designing and developing large, complex, highly available, mission-critical server applications.
- Strong understanding of backend architecture, application integration, data access, and enterprise development practices.
Enterprise Integration & Architecture – 25%
- Strong expertise in enterprise integration design, including integration patterns, technologies, design principles, and best practices.
- In-depth knowledge of the Spring Framework, particularly Spring Integration.
- Experience designing and building enterprise integration solutions using Spring Integration.
- Strong knowledge of message-oriented middleware and Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) technologies.
- Experience with IBM App Connect Enterprise (ACE) and/or MuleSoft.
- Hands-on experience with integration technologies including:
- JMS
- AMQP
- REST APIs
- Message Queues

- Experience applying integration technologies within Microsoft Azure and cloud-based integration environments.

- Ability to translate business requirements into technical architecture and detailed solution designs.

- Experience developing prototypes and proof-of-concept solutions for presentation to clients, stakeholders, and senior management.
- Experience evaluating existing systems to determine technical performance, capacity, scalability, and feasibility of expansion, modernization, renovation, or replacement.
- Strong conceptual and analytical skills with the ability to assess client needs and develop appropriate technology solutions.
- Experience conducting technology assessments and cost/benefit analyses.

Public Sector / Enterprise Architecture Experience – 10%
- Experience working within a public sector environment, preferably within the Ontario Public Service (OPS).
- Experience working with Enterprise Architecture frameworks and standards.
- Familiarity with OPS standards, documentation requirements, architecture artifacts, templates, policies, and processes.
- Understanding of enterprise technology standards, infrastructure policies, procedures, service delivery processes, and information technology mandates.
- Experience working within structured governance and enterprise architecture environments.
General Technology Knowledge
The successful candidate should also demonstrate knowledge of:
- Integrated networking technologies.
- Mainframe and midrange server technologies.

Qualifications & Experience
The ideal candidate will have:
- 10+ years of backend development and enterprise integration experience.
- Extensive experience with REST Web Services, JPA, Hibernate, SQL, PL/SQL, and enterprise databases.
- Extensive enterprise integration architecture and development experience.
- Strong Spring Framework and Spring Integration experience.
- Experience with IBM App Connect Enterprise (ACE) and/or MuleSoft.
- Experience with APIs, messaging, middleware, ESB, JMS, AMQP, and REST-based integration.
- Experience with cloud-based integration, preferably within Azure.
- Experience designing solutions from business and technical requirements.
- Experience with system analysis, requirements gathering, use cases, prototyping, and solution architecture.
- Experience leading developers or working as a Team Lead.
- Strong documentation and communication skills.
- Public sector/OPS experience is considered an asset.
