Job Summary
We're looking for a designated CPA to lead our finance function as Director of Finance - a genuine seat-at-the-table role for someone who wants to help drive an entrepreneurial, fast-growing group of companies through its next stage, not just report on it. Reporting to the President, with hands-on support from our fractional CFO during onboarding, you'll build the financial infrastructure, KPIs, and team the business needs across multiple business lines - and work alongside ownership as a true strategic partner, not just closing the books on decisions others have already made.
You've built or scaled a finance function before and think about where the business is going, not just where it's been. You operate independently and don't need to be handed direction - you're comfortable assessing an ambiguous situation yourself, setting your own priorities, and building trust and credibility with a team as you go. Having made the leap from public practice into industry, you've proven yourself as a strategic finance leader ownership trusts to help drive decisions. Ambiguity and rapid growth read to you as opportunity, not risk.
What You’ll Do
- Own the company's financial strategy - set the direction for planning, forecasting, and financial decision-making as the business scales.
- Establish KPIs for each business line, track them monthly, and turn them into an action plan you execute against
- Build and lead the financial infrastructure - systems, processes, and internal controls - required to support the company through its next phase of growth.
- Partner directly with the President and operations leadership on strategic decisions: bidding and pricing strategy, capital and equipment investment, and long-term growth planning.
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow / working capital management to give leadership a clear, forward-looking view of the business.
- Drive job costing and project-level profitability analysis, working closely with Operations, to inform bidding decisions and protect margins.
- Own banking, bonding/surety, and lending relationships - negotiating and managing the credit and bonding capacity needed to support growth.
- Assess the accounting team's structure and capabilities, and build the additional support, tools, and structure they need to keep pace with a growing business.
- Build, lead, and develop a high-performing accounting team, working across our related businesses as they grow.
- Lead risk management, insurance, and compliance, and oversee tax filings and year-end processes in partnership with external accountants.
- Evaluate and lead improvements to financial systems/ERP as the business grows.
- Take on an evolving scope of responsibility as the company grows - this role is expected to shape itself around the business.
What You Bring
- Designated CPA
- Progressive finance leadership experience - ideally as a Senior Controller, Director of Finance, or VP of Finance; we're also open to a strong, up-and-coming Senior Manager who can show us real leadership and strategy-building experience, not just technical execution
- Prior experience in public accounting, with a proven transition into industry leadership
- A track record of building or significantly scaling a finance function - not just maintaining one
- Experience in construction, civil engineering, contracting, or another project-based, capital-intensive industry - job costing, WIP accounting, equipment financing, and bonding/surety experience are strongly preferred
- Comfortable operating with real autonomy and minimal day-to-day direction - you set your own priorities and don't wait to be told what to do
- Comfortable operating as a strategic partner to ownership and executive leadership, not solely an operational lead
- Strong people leadership - a proven ability to build, mentor, and develop a team
- An entrepreneurial mindset, genuine comfort with ambiguity, and real energy for being part of a fast-growing group of companies
