Job Description
Retrokid is seeking a highly organized, strategic, and hands-on Controller to oversee the financial operations of our Canadian and US entity. Working closely with our fractional CFO and senior leadership team, this individual will take ownership of day-to-day accounting, financial reporting, payroll, cash flow management, budgeting, and financial compliance.
This is both an operational and strategic role, requiring someone who can manage the details while understanding the bigger picture. The Controller will be responsible for ensuring financial accuracy, strengthening internal processes, identifying opportunities for cost optimization, and providing leadership with timely, actionable financial insights.
The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting expertise, experience in an eCommerce environment, and a proactive, solutions-oriented approach. As Retrokid continues to grow, this individual will play a critical role in building scalable financial processes, supporting business decisions, and ensuring the company's long-term financial health.
Responsibilities
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, bookkeeping, reconciliations, and internal financial controls.
- Prepare and manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, budgets, and cash flow forecasts.
- Manage financial reporting and accounting requirements for both Canadian and US entities.
- Oversee QuickBooks, QuickBooks Payroll, and related financial systems, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
- Coordinate with external tax agencies, accountants, and legal advisors to ensure timely compliance with Canadian and US reporting and filing obligations.
- Manage payroll processing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and ongoing financial reconciliations.
- Monitor cash flow, expenses, and financial commitments, including inventory purchasing, overseas vendors, and pre-order programs.
- Support inventory accounting, landed cost tracking, and eCommerce payment reconciliations.
- Deliver monthly financial reporting and analysis to the CEO and VP, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
- Work closely with the fractional CFO on financial planning, forecasting, and strategic business initiatives.
- Support contract reviews and provide financial analysis to assist with key business decisions.
- Identify opportunities to improve financial systems, streamline processes, optimize costs, and strengthen financial accountability.
- Respond to financial information requests from senior leadership and support cross-functional business initiatives.
Requirements and Experience
- Accounting designation with a minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience.
- Previous experience working within an eCommerce, retail, or consumer products organization.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting practices, with experience managing or supporting US financial reporting (Avalara) considered an asset.
- Experience managing budgets, cash flow, inventory, pre-orders, and overseas vendor relationships.
- Proficiency in QuickBooks and QuickBooks Payroll, with experience integrating financial systems and improving accounting processes.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate financial data into clear, actionable business insights.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills with a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
- Exceptional attention to detail, financial accuracy, confidentiality, and professionalism.
