JOB SUMMARY:
Sagamok Anishnawbek is seeking a Family Support Worker to join the Child and Family Advocacy Unit. In this meaningful role, you will work directly with children and families to strengthen family functioning, support parents in building confidence and skills, and connect families with culturally appropriate services, resources, and supports.
You will walk alongside families who may be experiencing complex challenges or involvement with child protection services - helping them identify their strengths, develop plans, navigate services, and work toward greater safety, stability, and wellbeing.
POSITION DUTIES:
- Build trusting relationships with children, parents, extended family members, and other natural supports
- Work collaboratively with families to identify strengths, challenges, and needs and develop plans of care or action plans
- Coordinate and participate in family circles, case reviews, and case conferences
- Connect families with community-based and culturally appropriate prevention resources, services, and other supports
- Provide practical and intensive family supports that promote physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing
- Support and advocate for families during and following child welfare investigations
- Respond to crisis situations in collaboration with the Child Welfare Advocate and other partners when child safety concerns arise
- Plan and facilitate prevention, education, parenting, healthy child development, literacy, and life-skills programming based on community needs
- Work collaboratively with community agencies and service providers to ensure families can access the supports they need
- Maintain accurate case records, meeting notes, and activity reports
- Contribute to community wellness activities and Sagamok Anishnawbek's Koognaasewin work and evolving approaches to child and family wellbeing
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain
- Valid driver's licence and vehicle for on-the-job use
- Ability to travel on short notice
- Ability to work flexible hours on short notice
- Criminal Records Check prior to commencing employment
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality
- Respectful participation in cultural activities and ceremonies
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A university degree in human services is preferred
- A minimum of two years of experience providing direct services to children and families
- Knowledge of effective strategies, programs, and services that strengthen family functioning
- An understanding of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA) and child protection investigation processes and guidelines
- Strong relationship-building, communication, facilitation, negotiation, and de-escalation skills
- An ability to listen to and understand family perspectives and include families in decision-making and planning
- Knowledge and respect for Anishnawbek values, teachings, culture, and traditions, with a willingness to support traditional healing as part of holistic family wellness
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet, and email
- A Life Skills Coaching Certificate is considered an asset
- The ability to understand and speak Ojibwe is considered a definite asset
- Local knowledge and understanding of Sagamok Anishnawbek services is considered an asset
