Nature and Scope
The Technology Officer provides technical delivery, coordination, and administrative support for pawâcikêwikamik's technology-based initiatives, including the Maker Lodge and mâmawinitowin community technology deliveries. This position will positively promote and create an environment that demonstrates SIIT's vision, mission, and mandate.
General Accountability
The Technology Officer works collaboratively with the department and is responsible for technical operations and logistics support across the Maker Lodge, mâmawinitowin community deliveries, and satellite technology access points at other SIIT campuses. The incumbent organizes user access and training for students, faculty, staff, and community participants on the proper use of technology, tools, and materials; provides maintenance of equipment; oversees materials inventory; and ensures compliance with safety rules and policy guidelines.
Specific Accountabilities
The Technology Officer is responsible for providing technical support to Maker Lodge and mâmawinitowin users, and for the delivery of safety and equipment training. Working under the direction of the Coordinator, the incumbent shares responsibility for continuity of technical delivery knowledge across the team, and provides technical input into program design and future equipment planning. This role effectively combines relevant technical know-how with excellent interpersonal skills and proven self-drive. This role provides additional support as required and includes the following broad range of accountabilities:
Technical Operations & Administration
- Coordinate the installation, maintenance, repairs, calibration, troubleshooting, training, access, and operation of Maker Lodge and mâmawinitowin equipment and infrastructure
- With the Coordinator, help organize the purchase, asset management, stock control, and safe disposal of equipment and consumables
- Prepare, pack, transport, set up, and reconcile technology kits and equipment for community deliveries and off-site events
- Oversee day-to-day access to program spaces, ensuring equipment is functioning, safe, and appropriately supervised
- Support the maintenance and stocking of satellite technology access points at other SIIT campuses
- Contribute to developing and maintaining systems to plan use of technology resources, including equipment bookings, training, and scheduling
- Provide technical support for events, workshops, and space rentals as required
- Provide technical support for fabrication and product orders, including machine setup, production, and quality checks
- Document items made in the Maker Lodge and share on open-source sharing platforms
- Identify and plan for additional expertise as needed, including 3D modelling and digital fabrication, physical computing, extended reality, soft circuits, and makerspace craft
Training, Safety & Facilitation
- Deliver introductory and equipment-specific sessions enabling students, staff, and community members to safely use Maker Lodge tools and equipment
- Support the design and delivery of safety training, and ensure users complete required orientation before equipment access is granted
- Monitor compliance with safety rules, policies, and applicable regulatory guidelines, and report incidents and near-misses as required
- Co-facilitate community technology delivery sessions, including train-the-trainer components that build local capacity to sustain technology use after delivery
- Deliver sessions with and for partner organizations within the Maker Lodge
- Maintain current knowledge of equipment operation, safe work practices, and emerging technologies relevant to program delivery
Research & Reporting
- Assist with research as it relates to the improvement of pawâcikêwikamik technology and initiatives
- Assess and make recommendations for future technology and equipment needs
- Assist with the development and implementation of reports, and complete period-ending reports as required
- Collect participation, usage, and evaluation data for assigned programs and deliveries
- Gather and share feedback regarding technical and project needs
- Research facilitators, trainers, and vendors for projects as directed by the Coordinator
- Support the Coordinator to develop new concepts, particularly with relevant technical input
- Contribute to documentation of technical processes and procedures to support program continuity
Client Focus
- Liaise with facilitators, students, and community participants as required, providing quality technical services that enable them to develop their projects
- Work collaboratively across the SIIT learning community to contribute to a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship
- Evaluate existing equipment, infrastructure, and service delivery to identify opportunities for improvement
- Support users to realize projects, from concept to prototype
- Provide client and stakeholder services in a timely, efficient, and tactful manner
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all clients, stakeholders, and funders
- Ensure strict confidentiality and privacy of information as it relates to students, clients, staff, the Institute, and other third parties
