School District No. 73 (Kamloops-Thompson) is currently accepting applications for the position of Speech Language Pathologist Assistant. This is a full-time, temporary position, ending June 29, 2027.
Under the supervision of the Principal(s), this position is responsible for assisting Speech-Language Pathologist with assessment and intervention programs for designated students on the Speech-Language caseload. The SLPA carries out a variety of tasks associated with the preparation of materials, assisting and providing individual/group remediation and support to students in need of speech and/or language therapy.
Typical Duties
- Prepares therapy plans and material required for Speech-Language Pathologists’ service delivery.
- Documents treatment plans and student performance in an accurate and concise manner.
- Communicates with school staff, students and Speech-Language Pathologists.
- Documenting treatment plans and student performance in an accurate and concise manner.
- Assists with in-service and other system-wide activities.
- Observes, monitors, evaluates, records and provides feedback in areas identified as specific program goals/needs.
- Works with visual schedules.
- Interacts with parents, teachers and outside government/social agencies.
- Other related duties as required/assigned.
Abilities, Knowledge And Skills
- Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with the public, parents, students, teachers, Principals and other employees of the Board.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to identify and perform a variety of tasks within the program plan.
- Training and experience related to child development and childhood exceptionalities, specific articulation and language development, speech and language disorders and treatments and interventions.
- Demonstrates excellent oral, written, interpersonal, time management and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to follow directions.
- Ability to handle unpredictable behavior in a calm, rational manner.
- Ability to maintain clear, detailed data and records.
- Successful completion of POPARD training course.
- Ability to work independently and with a variety of personality types.
- Knowledge of Boardmaker.
- Proficient knowledge of and/or experience with computers and various programs.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 supplemented by completion of Communicating Disorders Assistant (CDA) diploma or equivalent two (2) year program.
- Eligible for Supportive Personnel Membership with the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists.
- Three (3) year’s proven previous work experience in the field.
- Valid B.C. Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
