As a Driving Instructor with SE Health’s Driver Assessment and Training Program, you’ll work in partnership with Occupational Therapists to provide specialized on-road assessments, rehabilitation, and individualized driver training for clients with disabilities and medical conditions. Using your strong instructional, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, you’ll help clients build the skills and confidence they need to drive safely, achieve their personal mobility goals, and receive an exceptional client experience.

Who You’ll Serve
- Support individuals returning to driving or learning new ways to drive due to medical conditions, injuries, disabilities, or age-related changes. You’ll provide individualized instruction in a safe, respectful, and supportive environment
Responsibilities
- Assist Occupational Therapists with on-road driving assessments.
- Deliver individualized driver rehabilitation training under the supervision and direction of an Occupational Therapist, implementing training plans designed to address each client's unique needs and goals.
- Provide and maintain an instructor vehicle equipped with dual controls and appropriate adaptive driving equipment.
- Prepare, inspect, and maintain vehicles and adaptive equipment according to manufacturer recommendations.
- Assist clients in navigating Ministry of Transportation licensing requirements and processes.
- Complete accurate and timely documentation following SE Health standards.
- Communicate regularly with Occupational Therapists regarding client performance, progress, and training goals.
- Respond professionally and effectively to client needs and concerns.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure high-quality client service.
- Participate in ongoing staff education and training as required.
Requirements
- Certification as an Ontario Driving Instructor.
- Minimum five (5) years of experience as an in-vehicle driving instructor.
- Ability to provide an insured training vehicle equipped with dual brake controls and installation of basic adaptive driving equipment, including hand controls, a left-foot accelerator, and spinner knob.
- Maintain Business General Liability Insurance coverage of at least $2,000,000.
- Active membership with the Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists (ADED).
- Maintain a minimum of eight (8) hours of driver rehabilitation continuing education every two years in accordance with MTO Functional Assessment Centre requirements.
- Experience working with senior drivers, drivers experiencing driving anxiety, and new drivers with learning disabilities is strongly preferred.
- Experience with modified vehicles and adaptive driving equipment is preferred.
- Valid Ontario Class G driver's license with an excellent driving record.
- Demonstrated ability to establish positive working relationships with clients and families.
- Understanding of the learning needs of older adults and individuals with disabilities.
- Knowledge of driver rehabilitation and adaptive driving practices is considered an asset.
- OTA, PTA, Rehabilitation Service Worker, adult education, or related rehabilitation experience is considered an asset.
- Able to work independently while collaborating effectively with Occupational Therapists and other team members.
