Who We Are
At SFIR Consulting Ltd., we are on a mission to redefine accounting.
We believe accountants should be proactive, trusted advisors, not reactive service providers. Our clients rely on us year-round to help them make informed financial decisions that directly impact profitability, growth, and long-term stability. We combine 'Big Firm Expertise' with 'Small Firm Values' to deliver thoughtful, tailored solutions, and we take that responsibility seriously.
Job Description
We are hiring one full-time Intern Staff Accountant,
reporting to the Accounting Manager, for a 12-month co-op term from
May 3, 2027 to April 28, 2028.
The Intern Staff Accountant provides essential support to the accounting team by assisting with bookkeeping tasks, data entry, account reconciliations, and financial reporting under the supervision of senior staff. This role offers hands-on exposure to real client work and internal operations, giving the successful candidate the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a practical, fast-paced professional setting.
This is a structured development role designed to build your capabilities progressively over the course of the term. You will begin by assisting with supervised bookkeeping tasks, advancing to managing month-end close for assigned clients with minimal supervision, while also assisting with year-end close tasks under supervisor review. By the end of the term, you will be expected to demonstrate the ability to complete client tax filings independently, including sales tax, ad hoc filings, and 1099, T4, T4A, T4SUM, and T5 filings, even if you are not yet managing the full caseload independently on a day-to-day basis.
Our clients make real decisions based on what we deliver. This role exists to build accuracy, accountability, and client trust from the ground up.
This Role Is for Someone Who...
- Takes ownership of assigned tasks, follows through on
deliverables and deadlines, and proactively flags process
improvements rather than waiting to be told.
- Holds their work to a quality standard, because bookkeeping
accuracy directly affects client financial statements.
- Communicates clearly and proactively with clients and
colleagues under deadline pressure.
- Exercises sound judgment when handling confidential client
financial data, and raises concerns appropriately.
- Applies supervisor feedback and uses it to build toward
greater independence.
- Learns firm systems and client accounting software quickly and
with self-direction.
- Works effectively alongside colleagues with different working
styles on shared client files.
- Flags unusual balances and discrepancies for follow-up rather
than working around them.
- Records task and project status updates without needing to be prompted.
What You Will Be Responsible For
Client and Revenue-Focused Work
You will be responsible for:
- Maintaining accurate accounting records for multiple
bookkeeping clients.
- Performing monthly bank and credit card reconciliations for
bookkeeping clients.
- Reviewing and exporting financial reports from various
accounting systems.
- Maintaining accounts payable and accounts receivable
transactions for bookkeeping clients.
- Maintaining intercompany transactions and records to ensure
financial accuracy.
- Executing month-end close bookkeeping deliverables, and
supporting timely and accurate month-end close processes for
bookkeeping clients.
- Shadowing Staff Accountants on client tax submissions,
including 1099, T4, T4A, T4SUM, T5, and other sales tax or ad hoc
filings, and assisting with preparing and filing these under
supervision as directed.
Collaboration and Team Contribution
You will be responsible for:
- Collaborating with Staff Accountants, Accounting Managers, and
other accounting interns.
- Participating in company and team training and development sessions.
- Contributing to a collaborative, knowledge-sharing team environment.
Operational and Administrative Responsibility
You will be responsible for:
- Logging and tracking billable hours for assigned projects.
- Managing and updating Zoho Projects, Zoho CRM's Bookkeeping
module, and customer master data.
- Participating in weekly check-ins and implementing action items.
- Scheduling and participating in both internal and
client-facing meetings.
- Handling internal communication, administrative work, and
consistent record-keeping using company tools, including Zoho
Mail, Zoho Cliq, Zoho Projects, Zoho CRM, and Zoho WorkDrive.
Requirements
What We Are Looking For
These are non-negotiable:
- Current enrolment in a university co-op program in Accounting,
Finance, or a closely related field at the time of the internship.
- A practical understanding of core accounting principles,
including accrual accounting, reconciliations, and how
transactions impact financial statements.
- Clear, professional communication with clients and internal
team members regarding requests, issues, and follow-ups.
- Ownership and accountability for assigned tasks, deliverables,
and deadlines.
- Time management and prioritization of assigned tasks and
deadlines with guidance from supervisors, and proactive
communication when workload or competing priorities arise.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within
a team setting.
- A dedicated and professional remote workspace with minimal
distractions to support productivity.
Everything else, including firm tools, templates, workflows, internal systems, client engagement practices, and client tax filing preparation, we will train.
