Job Summary
The Utility Systems Technician performs intermediate semiskilled and skilled work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water and sewer lines, wells, pump stations and appurtenances; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Utility System Crew Leader or the Maintenance & Construction Supervisor.
Essential Job Functions
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily. The County provides reasonable accommodations to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the primary functions herein described.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs water and sewer lines and appurtenances.
- Makes water and sewer taps for service connections.
- Operates trucks, tractors, backhoe, air hammer, tapping machine, rodding machine and other mechanical equipment in connection with the above tasks.
- Performs general grounds maintenance tasks; excavates and backfills trenches.
- Installs and maintains water meters, fire hydrants, and valves.
- Reads water meters manually and through radio-reading equipment.
- Performs minor landscaping and asphalt work after excavation is completed.
- Performs relining of sewer collection system.
Education and Experience
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and basic experience in the maintenance, repair and/or construction of water and sewer lines, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications
Possession of a Class B commercial driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia preferred or the ability to obtain within 12 months employment. Certification for relining sewer pipes from Reline America preferred or the ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Knowledge of standard office practices, procedures, equipment and techniques.
- Knowledge of English, spelling and arithmetic.
- Knowledge of the organization and functions of the department.
- Knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance and repair of utility lines.
- Knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of utility lines and appurtenances.
- Skill in using common hand and power tools.
- Skill in communicating effectively orally in a highly interactive team-oriented work environment.
- Ability to operate standard office and other work-related equipment.
- Ability to operate backhoe and other medium construction equipment.
- Ability to perform manual and semiskilled labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
- Ability to keep office records and to prepare accurate reports from file sources.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
- Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance at work.
The annual starting pay range for this FLSA non-exempt position is
$40,705.59 - $46,811.43, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and internal equity. The County offers an excellent benefits package, including Virginia Retirement System, health and dental insurance, vacation and sick leave, and holidays. The successful candidate must pass a pre-employment, post-offer drug screening and background check.
