Position Overview
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides leadership and professional nursing care to residents in accordance with the Long-Term Care Homes Act, the standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), and organizational policies. The RN is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the delivery of high-quality, resident-centered care, supervising nursing staff, and acting as the “Nurse in Charge” during assigned shifts. The RN ensures that residents’ physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs are met while promoting dignity, independence, and quality of life.
Key Responsibilities
Resident Care
- Conduct comprehensive resident assessments and develop individualized care plans.
- Provide direct nursing care, including administering medications, treatments, and interventions in accordance with physician orders and CNO standards.
- Monitor and evaluate residents’ health status, responding promptly to changes or emergencies.
- Provide wound care, palliative care, chronic disease management, and pain management as required.
- Collaborate with residents and families to support care goals and decision-making.
In-Charge Duties (Leadership & Coordination)
- Serve as the Nurse in Charge during assigned shifts, overseeing the nursing unit or home.
- Ensure adequate staffing levels, adjusting assignments as needed to meet resident care needs.
- Provide leadership, support, and supervision to Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) and Personal Support Workers (PSWs).
- Act as the first point of contact for residents, families, staff, and physicians when the DOC/ADOC is not available.
- Coordinate emergency responses, including medical crises, fire alarms, or safety incidents.
- Ensure accurate reporting and documentation of critical incidents and escalate concerns to management as required.
Collaboration & Teamwork
- Work with physicians, nurse practitioners, dietitians, therapists, and other interdisciplinary team members to deliver holistic resident care.
- Facilitate care conferences, family meetings, and interdisciplinary discussions.
- Support and mentor staff by role modeling professional standards of practice.
- Promote teamwork, communication, and a positive work environment.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of assessments, care provided, and resident outcomes in electronic health records.
- Ensure compliance with the Long-Term Care Homes Act, 2007, CNO standards, and Ministry of Long-Term Care requirements.
- Participate in audits, inspections, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Safeguard resident confidentiality and privacy at all times.
Health, Safety & Risk Management
- Ensure safe practices in medication administration, infection prevention, and resident care.
- Monitor and enforce health and safety standards for residents, staff, and visitors.
- Investigate, report, and document resident incidents, workplace injuries, or hazards.
- Actively participate in the Joint Health and Safety Committee and emergency preparedness activities as required.
Qualifications
Education & Certification
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) or equivalent.
- Current registration and good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
- Current CPR and First Aid certification.
- Additional training in gerontology, leadership, or palliative care is an asset.
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in long-term care, hospital, or community health settings.
- Supervisory or charge nurse experience strongly preferred.

Working Conditions
- Onsite in a long-term care home.
- Direct resident care, including exposure to bodily fluids and infection risks.
- May include day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.
- Responsible for being “In Charge” of the home during assigned shifts when senior leadership is not present.
