About the Role:The CMHC, Crisis Support Worker plays a critical role in providing immediate and compassionate mental health support to individuals experiencing acute psychological distress or crisis situations. This position involves assessing client needs rapidly, developing safety plans, and connecting individuals with appropriate resources to stabilize their condition. The role requires collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to ensure continuity of care and effective crisis intervention. The Crisis Support Worker acts as a vital link between clients and community services, advocating for client needs while maintaining confidentiality and professional boundaries. Ultimately, this position aims to reduce the risk of harm, promote recovery, and support clients in navigating complex mental health challenges within the Canadian healthcare system.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of a recognized diploma or degree in Mental Health, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
- Certification as a Canadian Mental Health Counselor (CMHC) or equivalent credential.
- Experience working in crisis intervention or mental health support roles, preferably within a healthcare or community service setting.
- Strong knowledge of mental health disorders, crisis management techniques, and relevant legislation in Canada.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and on-call shifts.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Additional training or certification in suicide prevention, trauma-informed care, or substance use counseling.
- Experience working with diverse populations, including Indigenous communities and culturally diverse groups.
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and data management software.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and French or other languages commonly spoken in Canada.
- Previous experience in a hospital or emergency department setting.
Responsibilities:
- Respond promptly to crisis calls and walk-in clients, conducting thorough risk assessments to determine immediate needs and safety concerns.
- Provide emotional support, de-escalation techniques, and crisis intervention to individuals experiencing mental health emergencies.
- Develop individualized safety and care plans in collaboration with clients and healthcare professionals.
- Coordinate referrals and follow-up services with community agencies, hospitals, and mental health providers to ensure seamless client care.
- Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of client interactions, assessments, and interventions in compliance with organizational policies and legal requirements.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss client progress and update care strategies.
- Engage in ongoing professional development and training to stay current with best practices in crisis intervention and mental health care.

The required skills enable the Crisis Support Worker to effectively assess and respond to individuals in distress, utilizing active listening, empathy, and crisis de-escalation techniques daily. Strong communication skills are essential for collaborating with clients, families, and healthcare teams to develop and implement safety plans. Organizational skills support accurate documentation and case management, ensuring continuity of care and compliance with legal standards. Preferred skills such as cultural competency and bilingualism enhance the ability to serve diverse client populations with sensitivity and respect. Proficiency with technology, including electronic health records, facilitates efficient information sharing and coordination across multidisciplinary teams.
