Organization Description Sinfonia Toronto is a leading Canadian chamber orchestra composed of virtuoso string players performing standing in the tradition of great European ensembles, led by Music Director Nurhan Arman. The orchestra presents a wide-ranging repertoire from Baroque to contemporary works, including many premieres and music by Canadian composers recognized by the Canada Council for the Arts. It collaborates regularly with distinguished national and international soloists and performs its Masterpiece Series in Toronto’s premier concert halls. Sinfonia Toronto records on multiple labels, is frequently broadcast on radio, and has earned a national JUNO Award. The orchestra has toured extensively across Europe, South America, China, the United States, and Canada, receiving critical acclaim, enthusiastic audience responses, and standing ovations at home and abroad.
Role Description The Volunteer Board Director will contribute to the strategic leadership and governance of Sinfonia Toronto, supporting its artistic mission, community presence, and long-term sustainability. This on-site role, located in Toronto, ON, involves participating in regular board and committee meetings, reviewing organizational performance, and contributing to policy development and strategic planning. The Director will help oversee financial stewardship, including budgets, fundraising initiatives, and resource allocation, and may assist in cultivating relationships with donors, partners, and community stakeholders. Day-to-day activities can include attending concerts and events, representing the organization in the community, providing input on marketing and audience development, and supporting initiatives that strengthen diversity, accessibility, and educational outreach. This is a volunteer role that requires a commitment to the orchestra’s mission and a willingness to collaborate closely with fellow board members, the Director of Operations and the Music Director.
Qualifications
- Experience in nonprofit or arts governance, including familiarity with board responsibilities, strategic planning, and policy development.
- Financial literacy and comfort with reviewing budgets, financial reports, and funding strategies; experience in fundraising or donor relations is an asset.
- Background or strong interest in classical music, performing arts, or cultural organizations, with an appreciation for chamber orchestra repertoire.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders, supporters, and community partners.
- Capacity to commit time for board meetings, committee work, concert attendance, and organizational representation in Toronto, ON.
- Previous board experience, professional expertise in law, finance, marketing, education, or community leadership, and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion are considered beneficial.
