Electrician

Under the supervision and direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Electrician is responsible for performing electrical maintenance and installation of all electrical systems; providing assistance to the Maintenance Supervisor; and other various duties.
Responsibilities May Include But Are Not Limited To:
- Perform installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and testing of electrical systems and equipment, including power, lighting, fire alarm, HVAC, generators, motors, controls, and distribution systems.
- Read and interpret electrical plans, specifications, and technical documents to determine wiring layouts, system requirements, and material needs.
- Install wiring, cables, raceways, supports, and associated electrical components in new and existing facilities.
- Diagnose electrical faults, conduct safety inspections, isolate problems, and replace or repair defective components.
- Obtain and transport required materials, supplies, and equipment from suppliers and service centres as needed.
- Coordinate worksite preparation, including arranging for the movement of furniture, fixtures, books, and equipment when required.
- Support the Maintenance Supervisor by providing progress updates, identifying issues requiring attention, and recommending corrective actions.
- Prepare labour, material, and project cost estimates, coordinate with vendors, and ensure materials and equipment are available for assigned projects.
- Assist other trades and maintenance staff, provide guidance to helpers, and support orientation and training of new employees.
- Communicate with school administrators, instructional staff, custodial staff, and Building Department personnel regarding project schedules and service disruptions.
- Maintain tools, equipment, permits, records, and preventive maintenance programs while ensuring compliance with safety standards and industry best practices.
- Operate equipment safely and maintain awareness of students, staff, and the public in work and shop areas.
- Stay current with industry standards, products, codes, and installation practices.
- Perform other related duties within the classification and support operational requirements as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Completion of secondary education with a Journeyman Electrician Certificate/License and a current Class "B" Electrical Contractor’s License.
- Three to five years of related electrical experience, including reading and interpreting engineered blueprints, drawings, and specifications; experience in this area is considered an asset.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team environment.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with staff, schools, departments, divisions, and external organizations.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize work and adapt to frequent interruptions.
- Proven ability to meet tight deadlines and coordinate work with multiple trades and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy when measuring, installing, and maintaining electrical systems and equipment.
- Physically capable of performing demanding work, including lifting and moving materials exceeding 25 kg.
- Ability to perform sustained physical activities such as standing, walking, kneeling, climbing, stretching, and bending for extended periods throughout the workday.
- Commitment to safe work practices and maintaining high standards of workmanship.
