The Structural Plate Fitter works under the direction of the Structural Supervisor and Production Manager, and ultimately reports to the Production Manager. While this position is not formally a supervisory role, the Structural Plate Fitter is expected to help direct Apprentice Fitters/Welders and helpers during tasks, and to guide and mentor junior employees with respect and fairness, helping our apprentices grow their professional and technical skill set.

Responsibilities
- Arrive at least ten minutes prior to the assigned shift to receive instructions, complete handover at shift change, and participate in toolbox talks and pre-shift safety meetings.
- Use time-tracking software to report an accurate description of project taskings and time spent on project scopes throughout the workday.
- Identify hazards and complete all required pre-shift paperwork, including the FLHA and applicable equipment checklists.
- Note changes in workplace hazards and inform others as necessary.
- Educate apprentices and laborers about workplace hazards.
- Perform upkeep and maintenance on fitting tools, rigging equipment, and shop machinery.
- Review structural blueprints before commencing a project, ask pertinent questions, and confirm understanding of the project overview, materials, scheduling, and other meaningful details.
- Check materials before beginning a project to ensure nothing is missing from the structural steel cut list and that all material is cut to tolerance.
- Lay out, mark, and prepare materials to blueprint details, and fit up structural and plate assemblies to noted dimensions within acceptable tolerances.
- Tack weld and secure assemblies as required to hold fit-up prior to full welding, in accordance with CWB fit-up standards.
- Review work completed by apprentices to confirm it meets quality standards ahead of the QA stage of each project.
- Demonstrate to apprentices the standard of quality expected, hold them accountable to that standard, and encourage and guide them to continually improve their fitting skills.
- Work with other trades in-house to ensure quality and attention to detail remain consistent across all projects.
- Work with QC personnel and welders to troubleshoot fit-up issues, resolve deficiencies, and improve processes.
- Attend courses and training as required to improve knowledge and overall skill set. Perform housekeeping duties and participate in shop cleaning.
