Our client is looking for a thoughtful, capable, and people-focused Area Director to join its Halifax team. Position Summary
The Area Director will provide overall leadership for a complex Halifax healthcare operation of approximately 400 employees. The role is part of the organization’s national third-party business division and is accountable for operational performance, financial management, people leadership, client relationships, and continued business growth.
This on-site Halifax role requires a leader who can oversee a large healthcare operation, strengthen client relationships, identify growth opportunities, and ensure strong operational, financial, people, and service performance.
Key Responsibilities
Business Development & Client Relationships
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, healthcare partners, government and community stakeholders, and other key decision-makers.
- Identify opportunities to expand services, strengthen client relationships, respond to evolving community needs, and support sustainable growth.
- Participate in business development, contract discussions, and other activities that contribute to client retention and sustainable growth.
Financial & Contract Management
- Provide overall financial management for the branch, including annual budgeting, forecasting, expense management, and ongoing analysis of financial performance.
- Understand, interpret, negotiate, and manage third-party service agreements and healthcare-related contracts.
Operational & Service Leadership
- Provide overall leadership and strategic direction for the Halifax branch, ensuring strong operational performance, high-quality service delivery, and continued business growth.
- Establish clear operational priorities, performance expectations, and accountabilities across the branch.
- Work closely with clinical leadership to ensure services meet established quality, regulatory, contractual, and organizational standards.
People & Leadership
- Lead, coach, and develop operational and clinical leaders, ensuring they have the direction, resources, and support required to effectively lead their respective teams.
- Establish clear expectations and hold leaders accountable for performance while fostering an environment of trust, collaboration, and continuous development.
Health and Safety
- Work with clinical and operational leaders to ensure adherence to applicable government requirements, organizational policies, contractual obligations, and ensure the operation maintains high standards of quality, safety and client service.
- Promote a strong health and safety culture and ensure appropriate leadership accountability for safe work practices and regulatory compliance.
Qualification & Experience
- Progressive operational and people leadership experience within healthcare or a related complex service environment, ideally including home and community care, continuing care, rehabilitation, medical or occupational health services, or organizations delivering publicly funded, privately delivered, or contracted healthcare services.
- Demonstrated commercial and business development experience, with a track record of identifying and pursuing growth opportunities, strengthening and expanding client relationships, and contributing to new or expanded services and revenue opportunities.
- Strong understanding of the Nova Scotia healthcare landscape and the stakeholders involved in healthcare and community service delivery across the province.
- Strong financial management experience, including responsibility for budgets, financial performance, forecasting, and expense management.
- Experience interpreting and managing complex service agreements or contracts; direct experience negotiating third-party or healthcare-related agreements.
- A university degree or college diploma in a related discipline is considered an asset.
Preferred/Assets
- Experience working within an organization that delivers services through government, health authority, insurer, institutional, or other third-party contracts.
- Strong business judgment, strategic thinking, and an entrepreneurial and growth-oriented mindset.
- Valid driver's licence and flexibility for occasional travel as required.
