Junior School Vice Principal - PYP Coordinator

We are seeking an experienced and collaborative educational leader to serve as Vice Principal & PYP Coordinator for our Junior School (K–5). The Vice Principal & PYP Coordinator is a key member of the Junior School leadership team who directly supports the Junior School Principal, and by extension, the Senior Leadership Team. The position's primary responsibilities are instructional leadership, faculty development and accountability, and leadership of the IB Primary Years Programme. The role also provides educational oversight of the Junior School library and maintains a regular teaching connection with students through inquiry-based library classes.
The successful candidate will join an already strong faculty and will be expected to build upon that foundation, raising expectations, developing faculty capacity, strengthening PYP implementation, and ensuring consistently high standards of teaching and professional practice.
This full-time leadership position commences August 16, 2027.

Leadership & Faculty Development
- Support the Junior School Principal in the effective day-to-day leadership and operation of the Junior School.
- Establish and uphold high expectations for teaching quality, professional conduct, collaboration, and fulfilment of faculty responsibilities.
- Monitor and strengthen teaching through classroom observation, coaching, feedback, professional learning, and formal evaluation.
- Ensure faculty meet their instructional, curricular, administrative, and professional obligations, providing appropriate support and addressing performance concerns, conflict, disciplinary matters, and challenging professional issues directly, including determining appropriate actions and follow-up.
- Collaborate with the Junior School Principal and Senior Leadership Team to support effective and consistent faculty management, including the application of the Collective Agreement and the maintenance of positive, constructive labour relations.
- Identify staffing needs and play a leading role in the recruitment, selection, onboarding, development, evaluation, retention, and succession of Junior School faculty.
- Assist the Junior School Principal and faculty with student behaviour management and disciplinary matters when administrative support or intervention is required.
- Contribute to admissions, student assessments and class placements.
- Assume additional Junior School leadership responsibilities when the Principal is absent or unavailable.
PYP & Instructional Leadership
- Lead the continued development, implementation, and evaluation of the IB Primary Years Programme across K–5.
- Advance faculty understanding and implementation of the PYP, strengthening inquiry-based, concept-driven, and transdisciplinary teaching and learning.
- Champion consistently strong, research-informed literacy and numeracy practices through coaching, collaborative planning, professional learning, and the use of evidence of student learning to strengthen instruction.
- Oversee the Programme of Inquiry, unit planning and reflection, assessment practices, Approaches to Learning, and horizontal and vertical curriculum alignment.
- Oversee curriculum mapping through Toddle, ensuring Units of Inquiry, assessments, and curriculum records are current, coherent, and aligned with established PYP and school expectations.
- Ensure alignment with British Columbia curriculum requirements and accountability for faculty planning, assessment, reporting, and related programme expectations.
- Design and lead PYP professional learning that builds faculty capacity, promotes shared practice, and supports ongoing programme development.
- Oversee the annual budget for IB professional learning and related programme requirements, ensuring appropriate planning and coordination of expenditures in collaboration with the Junior School Principal and relevant school departments.
- Lead Parent Information Sessions that deepen understanding of the PYP, including inquiry and concept-driven learning, the Programme of Inquiry, Approaches to Learning, assessment, student agency and action, and other key programme elements.
- Lead IB evaluation and continuous improvement processes, including the Self-Study, Programme Development Plan, and coordination of evaluation visits in collaboration with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
- Serve as the primary liaison with the IB, overseeing programme requirements and records, and provide leadership and support for the Grade 5 PYP Exhibition.
Assessment & Student Learning
- Analyze multiple sources of student assessment data, including MAP Growth, classroom assessments, and other evidence of learning to identify patterns and trends in student achievement and growth.
- Work with the Junior School Principal and faculty to use assessment findings to establish instructional priorities and areas of emphasis, particularly in literacy and numeracy.
- Build faculty capacity to use assessment evidence to inform planning, differentiation, intervention, enrichment, and instructional improvement.
- Monitor student learning over time to evaluate the impact of instructional priorities and practices.
Library, Teaching & School Life
- Provide educational and strategic oversight of the Junior School library as a learning and inquiry hub, including oversight of the Library Technician Coordinator and the effective management and development of print, digital, and professional resources.
- Ensure library resources and programming meaningfully support literacy, research, classroom learning, and the PYP Programme of Inquiry.
- Teach scheduled K–5 library classes connected to grade-level Units of Inquiry, developing students’ research, information and digital literacy, communication, and inquiry skills.
- Support literacy and inquiry initiatives such as author visits, book fairs, reading celebrations, and other learning experiences.
- Support teachers with the purposeful integration of technology into teaching and learning, including the effective use of multiple digital platforms, tools, and resources.
- Lead a co-curricular club(s) during the school year.
- Participate actively in school events and contribute to the wider life of the K–12 school community.
Required Qualifications
- A deep understanding of the IB PYP and the role of administrative leaders in independent schools;
- Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail;
- Self-motivated with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively;
- Strong interpersonal, communication, managerial, presentation and public-speaking skills;
- Effective conflict resolution skills;
- BC Ministry of Education: Certificate of Qualification or Independent School Teaching Certificate;
- Master of Education (or in pursuit thereof), or higher level training in administration and leadership.
Teaching and Leadership Experience
- Significant, successful PYP teaching experience;
- 2 years leadership experience (minimum);
- PYP Coordinator training (preferred);
- Experience in a leadership role working across the PYP, MYP and DP.
