Position Summary
At Stem Health, preventive diagnostics are not an afterthought they are the backbone of how we understand each member's health. Two of our most important imaging modalities sit at the intersection of bone health, metabolic function, and breast health: DEXA scanning and mammography. Performed with precision and interpreted in clinical context, these studies help our physician team detect risk early, intervene proactively, and build a richer, more complete picture of each member's long-term health.
We are looking for a registered Medical Radiation Technologist (MRT) with experience in both DEXA and mammography to join our diagnostic team. In this dual-scope role, you will perform high quality bone density, body composition, and mammographic studies as part of members' comprehensive preventive health assessments bringing the same technical precision, clinical awareness, and member-centred care to both modalities. This role is ideal for a technologist who takes pride in their craft, values the clinical significance of the studies they perform, and understands that every image is the beginning of a meaningful conversation about someone's health.
Key Responsibilities
DEXA scanning and bone health imaging
- Perform high quality dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA/DXA) scans at central skeletal sites (lumbar spine, proximal femur, forearm) for bone mineral density assessment and fracture risk stratification.
- Conduct total body composition scans to accurately measure lean mass, fat mass, visceral adipose tissue, and regional body composition as part of comprehensive metabolic and preventive health profiles.
- Ensure precise patient positioning and scan acquisition in strict accordance with ISCD technical standards and manufacturer protocols to guarantee reproducible, diagnostically reliable results.
- Analyze DEXA outputs accurately including T- scores, Z- scores, bone mineral content (BMC), BMD values, and body composition metrics and generate clear, well-structured reports for the reviewing physician.
- Identify and flag clinically significant findings including low bone density, vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) findings, or notable body composition patterns to the appropriate physician promptly.
- Support longitudinal tracking by ensuring consistent scan protocols across follow-up studies to enable valid comparisons over time.
Mammographic imaging
- Perform high-quality screening and diagnostic mammography examinations using 2D digital and 3D digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) technology, in accordance with CMRITO standards, CAMRT best practices, and applicable provincial guidelines.
- Position members and apply appropriate breast compression with precision and care maximizing diagnostic image quality while minimizing discomfort and radiation dose in accordance with ALARA principles.
- Acquire additional views (MLO, CC, spot compression, magnification) as clinically indicated to ensure complete and diagnostically actionable imaging studies.
- Review each set of images in real time for technical quality, completeness, and positioning accuracy before releasing the study, applying corrective technique as needed.
- Perform 3D digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) studies to produce layered, high-resolution breast images that reduce recall rates and improve detection of cancers in dense breast tissue.
- Escalate any clinically significant mammographic findings including masses, architectural distortion, suspicious calcifications, or asymmetries to the reviewing physician promptly and professionally.
Member Preparation And Experience
- Welcome members to the imaging suite and prepare them for their examination with warmth, clarity, and professionalism explaining each procedure, what the technology measures, and what the results will tell us about their health.
- Conduct thorough member intake prior to each study, reviewing contraindications, relevant clinical history, prior imaging, and medications that may affect interpretation or technique.
- Provide sensitive, unhurried care for all members with particular attentiveness to those who are apprehensive, symptomatic, less mobile, or undergoing a mammogram for the first time. Maintain privacy and dignity throughout every examination.
Equipment quality control and safety
- Perform daily phantom calibration and QC procedures for DEXA equipment, and daily QC tests for mammography equipment as required by regulatory standards and manufacturer protocols maintaining accurate, current logs for both modalities.
- Ensure all equipment is calibrated, functioning optimally, and compliant with applicable radiation safety regulations at all times.
- Coordinate equipment maintenance, servicing, and troubleshooting for both imaging systems with the operations team and manufacturer support as needed.
- Adhere strictly to infection control protocols and maintain an imaging suite that is clean, organized, and appropriately prepared for each member.
Clinical collaboration and documentation
- Collaborate closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, and the broader care team to ensure imaging results from both modalities are integrated into each member's preventive care plan and Unified Health Story.
- Document all procedures, QC records, and imaging data accurately and promptly within the clinic's EHR and digital imaging systems (PACS/imaging management platforms).
- Contribute to the development and refinement of imaging protocols, member education materials, and diagnostic workflows for both DEXA and mammography as the clinic's program matures.
Qualifications & Experience
- Registered with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) required. Registration must include both the Mammography and Radiological Technology (or equivalent) practice domains.
- Current membership with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT); CAMRT Mammography Certificates (Mammography 1 and 2) or equivalent required.
- Certified Bone Densitometry Technologist (CBDT®) through the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD), or ARRT bone densitometry certification required or actively being pursued. ISCD CBDT® is strongly preferred.
- Minimum 2–3 years of combined clinical experience performing both mammography and DXA scanning; experience in a screening clinic, hospital-based program, or private imaging setting is preferred.
- Proficiency in 2D full-field digital mammography (FFDM) and 3D digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT).
- Proficiency in DEXA image analysis and reporting software (Hologic, GE Lunar, or equivalent).
- Strong working knowledge of bone health, osteoporosis, FRAX fracture risk assessment, and body composition metrics and their clinical significance.
- Experience with Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) protocols is a significant asset.
- Current BLS/BCLS certification.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills warm, professional, and sensitive in all member-facing interactions, including with members undergoing breast imaging for the first time or following a clinical concern.
- Meticulous attention to positioning accuracy, image quality, and technical protocol adherence across both modalities.
- Proficiency with digital imaging systems, PACS, and EHR platforms.
- Experience in a private clinic, executive health, or preventive medicine setting is a strong asset.
