POSITION OBJECTIVE: The Engineering Co-op Student – Advanced Molding Solutions (AMS) will report to and support the Manager – Advanced Molding Solutions in injection molding engineering, tooling, process optimization, technical project execution, and Business Development support. The role provides hands-on exposure to DFM/DFA, mold and tooling reviews, molding trials, data analysis, documentation, and continuous improvement activities in a regulated manufacturing environment.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Support the AMS Manager with day-to-day technical and project activities related to injection molding, tooling, and process development.
- Assist with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) reviews for molded components, tooling concepts, and customer opportunities.
- Support mold and tooling design reviews, including review of part geometry, gate/ejection concepts, cooling, material selection, and manufacturability considerations.
- Assist with mold flow / molding simulation activities, data preparation, results review, and documentation, as assigned.
- Support injection molding trials, process characterization, DOE activities, scientific molding studies, and troubleshooting.
- Collect, analyze, and summarize molding data such as cycle time, scrap, process parameters, dimensional results, and trial outcomes.
- Assist with MQTS / rapid tooling and prototyping activities, including candidate part assessment, insert/tooling coordination, trial support, and documentation.
- Support tooling quotations, BOM and cost analysis, cycle-time estimates, and technical inputs for Business Development opportunities.
- Assist with PPAP, FMEA, APQP, validation, work instructions, reports, and other technical documentation as applicable.
- Support root cause investigations and continuous improvement initiatives related to molding, tooling, quality, and productivity.
- Participate in cross-functional project meetings and coordinate actions with Engineering, QA, Operations, PMO, suppliers, and Business Development.
- Maintain organized project records and complete assigned work in accordance with Sterling procedures, ISO 13485, FDA, and applicable customer requirements.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechatronics, or related discipline.
- Strong interest in injection molding, tooling, manufacturing engineering, and product industrialization.
- Hands-on and self-motivated with strong problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
- Experience with SolidWorks or other CAD software is preferred.
- Knowledge of engineering drawings, GD&T, DFM/DFA, and manufacturing processes is an asset.
- Exposure to injection molding, mold design, mold flow simulation, SPC, or scientific molding is an asset.
- Experience with Excel and engineering data analysis is preferred.
- Experience in a manufacturing or regulated environment is considered an asset.
