Job Description:
Role Summary
The RA&S Analytics team partners with business, marketing, distribution, product, and technology teams to turn complex data into actionable insights that improve marketing performance, advisor engagement, sales outcomes, and the client experience. The team is evolving from primarily delivering reporting and analytical support to building scalable data products, automated measurement solutions, and decision-ready insights that enable faster and more informed business decisions.
Reporting to the Manager of RA&S Marketing Analytics, the Senior Data Analyst, you will play a key role in this transformation. You will lead analytics from business-question definition through data integration, analysis, visualization, and recommendation. By connecting marketing, digital, prospect, client, advisor, and sales data, you will help stakeholders understand end-to-end journeys, identify performance opportunities, and translate analytical findings into measurable business actions.
Working collaboratively across RA&S and the broader Data and Analytics community, you will develop trusted reporting and analytical solutions, automate recurring processes, and communicate clear insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders. This role is well suited to someone who combines strong technical capability with curiosity, business acumen, stakeholder partnership, and a passion for solving complex problems.
Sun Life views success in this role related to 4 key characteristics:
Fierce curiosity. You are drawn to discovering and leveraging new data and taking on challenging business puzzles.
Understanding business. We’ve got a lot of data, but it’s not going to turn itself into insights, and you can’t help with that unless you understand what the numbers mean.
A passion for solving problems. The most successful data analysts don’t just spin data and give numbers; they solve the problem.
Technical skills. How to wrangle structured data is a must (i.e., SQL) with strong Python/PySpark skills needed as we migrate from on-prem computing using SAS to cloud based computing using Python. This role will also have a digital analysis component (Adobe Analytics).
What will you do?
- Support analytical work from requirements specification, data gathering, analysis to presentations to solve business problems. Be the analytical resource for the RA&S marketing teams
- Develop decision-ready reporting and dashboards that highlight performance drivers, emerging trends, and recommended actions.
- Merge campaign and digital analytics data with back-end source data to highlight our client journeys from beginning to end
- Draw out business insights from analytical output and work with team leads to put together business recommendations
- Put together effective presentations of findings and desire to present to multiple levels of stakeholders
- scalability, and team capacity.
- Leverage internal training, peers and other sources to continue to grow capabilities
What will you need to succeed?
- 5+ years working with data (i.e., quantitative analysis experience, including handling, manipulating and analyzing data and creating analytical reports)
- Comfortable writing complex SQL queries to extract and integrate data from multiple database sources
- Expert using Python/PySpark to work with data, with the flexibility to use both languages as we transition from one to the other
- Experience working with AWS stack – SageMaker, Glue, Lambda
- Experience with Adobe analytics, data visualization tools like Tableau, Quick Sight or the ability to self-learn these tools in role
- An effective and concise oral and written storytelling and communication skills
- Ability to work as a team to help deliver multiple projects with courage in managing expectations of team leaders
- Ability to document work
- BSc in a statistical, mathematical, or technical field (i.e., computer science)
What will be nice to have?
- Experience in life insurance/wealth management, or other financial services industry (e.g., retail banking, credit card, re-insurance and casualty insurance)
- Understanding of predictive and prescriptive techniques (i.e., regression, decision trees, deep learning etc.)
- MSc preferably in a statistical, mathematical, or technical field (i.e., computer science)
- Experience working with unstructured data
Unique Requirements:
- This role requires Reliability Status Clearance. In addition to a law enforcement inquiry and a credit check, as part of your application, the Government of Canada will ask if you lived or travelled outside of Canada for 6-consecutive months during the last 5 years, and you must account for all activities during this time.
