1.0 FTE Position - Teacher Of The Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing - Assignment until June 30, 2027 or return of incumbent

The Teacher of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing will need:
- the ability to cope with ambiguity and rapidly changing demands;
- to be knowledgeable of current curriculum goals and instructional practices;
- to apply evidence-based supports and interventions;
- to participate in on-going professional development/in-service in both regular and inclusive education;
- to be committed to inclusion and knowledgeable about inclusive practices and supporting school teams in promoting inclusion
of students with hearing differences;
- to have knowledge of issues relating to education of the deaf or hard of hearing;
- to adhere to current TDHH standards such as the current Association of Canadian Educators of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing
Specialist Standards.
Key responsibilities of the Teacher of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing:
- participate as a member of transdisciplinary team and consult with school-based, District and community partners to assist
with the inclusion of learners with identified hearing differences;
- interpret the learner's hearing differences and the implications of these hearing differences;
- assess the level of support required;
- coordinate and prepare Individual Education Plans (IEP's) for students designated with hearing difference;
- coordinate referrals for hearing assessments, British Columbia Deaf Education Committee (BCDEC), and Auditory Outreach
Provincial Resource Program referrals, etc.;
- teach communication skills using multi-modal strategies/skills;
- provide curriculum-based instructional support through language development activities for learners requiring direct service;
- identify and order materials and technology and coordinate hearing technology repair;
- monitor learner use of hearing aids, FM systems and other technology that assists student learning and communication;
- provide the classroom teacher with information regarding the role of Education Assistants and/or Educational Visual
Language Interpreters in the implementation of strategies for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing;
- provide or arrange professional development/in-service surrounding hearing and hearing differences for learners, teachers
- and paraprofessionals;
- provide consultation for parents of learners with hearing differences;
- model and provide information regarding inclusive practices.
Minimum Academic Qualifications/Experience
- valid B.C. Teaching Certificate;
- diploma or Master's degree in Education of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing;
- minimum of two years satisfactory teaching experience.
Preferred Qualifications/Experience
- satisfactory experience as a Teacher of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing;
- satisfactory teaching experience where inclusion was a significant focus;
- fluency in American Sign Language.
Salary range is $59,711 to $109,520, with placement on the range based on length of service, FTE and qualifications in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
