Our challenge
We are seeking a skilled Node.js Developer to design, develop, and maintain scalable, secure, and high-performance backend applications. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in Node.js, TypeScript, MongoDB, real-time communication, authentication, messaging systems, and enterprise application integration.
The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams to build reliable services, APIs, and event-driven applications that meet business and technical requirements.
Additional Information*
The base salary for this position will vary based on geography and other factors. In accordance with law, the base salary for this role if filled within Toronto, ON is CAD $100K - CAD $110K/year & benefits (see below).
The Role
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, test, and maintain backend applications using Node.js and TypeScript.
- Build scalable RESTful APIs and backend services following clean code and software engineering best practices.
- Design and optimize MongoDB schemas, indexes, queries, and aggregation pipelines.
- Use Mongoose ORM for data modeling, validation, relationships, and database operations.
- Implement secure authentication, authorization, entitlement management, and role-based access controls.
- Apply encryption techniques to protect sensitive data in transit and at rest.
- Develop real-time communication features using WebSocket protocols.
- Process and manage real-time data streams efficiently and reliably.
- Implement file system operations, including file uploads, downloads, storage, validation, and access control.
- Integrate SMTP-based email functionality using NodeMailer.
- Develop and maintain integrations with enterprise message brokers such as RabbitMQ and Kafka.
- Implement event-driven and publish/subscribe architectures.
- Monitor and improve application performance, system I/O, resource utilization, and response times.
- Troubleshoot production issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement effective solutions.
- Write unit tests, integration tests, and maintain technical documentation.
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to development standards and best practices.
- Collaborate with product managers, architects, QA engineers, DevOps teams, and other developers.
- Work independently on assigned tasks while contributing effectively to team objectives.
- Exposure to Java-based applications or services will be an advantage.
Requirements:
- Strong professional experience with Node.js and TypeScript.
- Hands-on experience with MongoDB and Mongoose ORM.
- Solid understanding of NoSQL database design, data modeling, indexing, and query optimization.
- Experience implementing authentication and authorization mechanisms.
- Understanding of entitlement management, access control, and security best practices.
- Knowledge of encryption, secure API design, and data protection techniques.
- Practical experience with WebSockets and real-time application development.
- Experience with file system operations and file upload/download functionality.
- Hands-on experience integrating SMTP email services using NodeMailer.
- Experience with enterprise messaging platforms such as RabbitMQ, Kafka, or equivalent technologies.
- Understanding of pub/sub and event-driven architecture patterns.
- Good understanding of system I/O operations and backend performance optimization.
- Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and in a collaborative team environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred skills:
- Exposure to Java development or integration with Java-based systems.
- Experience building microservices or distributed systems.
- Familiarity with API security standards and token-based authentication.
- Experience with asynchronous programming and event-loop behavior in Node.js.
- Knowledge of application logging, monitoring, and performance profiling.
- Familiarity with automated testing and CI/CD practices.
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum development environments.
