Job Description – Operator
The Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment used in pipeline construction, maintenance, integrity, and excavation projects. This role performs equipment inspections, excavation activities, material handling, and site preparation while ensuring compliance with company safety policies, ground disturbance protocols, project specifications, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment including excavators, backhoes, loaders, skid steers, and other assigned equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Perform excavation work around existing pipelines (live lines) and utilities while following ground disturbance requirements.
- Assist with pipeline exposure, repairs, installation, critical lifts, and restoration activities.
- Complete daily equipment inspections and report maintenance or repair requirements.
- Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, fueling, and greasing of equipment.
- Read and interpret stakes, maps, locates, work plans, and project specifications.
- Work closely with field crews, labourers, and supervisors to complete assigned tasks safely and efficiently.
- Maintain awareness of underground and overhead hazards during equipment operation.
- Ensure work areas are maintained in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
- Participate in daily safety meetings, hazard assessments, and inspections.
- Comply with all company, client, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
- May perform other related duties as assigned.
Experience
- High school diploma/GED required.
- Experience in energy or oil gas, pipeline, and water & sewage industry a plus
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience digging on hotlines.
- Valid class 5 driver's license (No GDL) (class 1 or 3 considered an asset)
- Pipeline construction or maintenance experience
- Equipment certifications and operator training
- Must have valid; Ground Disturbance Level 2, H2S Alive, Standard First Aid/CPR and CSTS/CSO or equivalent
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Willing to travel extensively.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, in English.
