Junior Estimator – Sewer, Watermain, Stormwater, Earthworks & Roadworks

We are currently seeking a full-time Junior Estimator to join our estimating team. This is an entry-level position intended for candidates with 0–2 years of experience, including recent graduates and those returning from co-op or summer placements. You will work directly alongside our Senior Estimators on sewer, watermain, stormwater, earthworks, and roadworks projects, receiving structured mentorship and taking on progressively greater responsibility as your technical skills develop.
Key Responsibilities:
· Perform quantity take-offs for materials, equipment, and labour under the direction of senior estimating staff.
· Assist in the preparation of accurate, detailed, and competitive cost estimates for sewer, watermain, stormwater, earthworks, and roadworks projects.
· Review and interpret project specifications, drawings, tender documents, and addenda, flagging discrepancies and unclear scope to the Senior Estimator.
· Help build and maintain cost breakdowns for labour, materials, subcontractors, and equipment usage.
· Contact subcontractors and suppliers to request pricing, then log, organize, and summarize the quotations received.
· Support the assembly of bid submissions - confirming that forms, bonding, addenda acknowledgements, and required attachments are complete and accurate well ahead of closing.
· Monitor tender advertisement portals and help maintain an active bid calendar.
· Maintain and organize estimating files, historical cost data, and supplier and subcontractor records.
· Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits with senior staff to build practical field knowledge.
· Assist in tracking bid results and compiling historical project data to support future estimating accuracy.
· Learn and apply municipal and provincial tendering processes, OPS standards, and construction codes.
· Actively seek direction and feedback from Senior Estimators, and take ownership of your own technical development.
Qualifications & Skills:
· 0–2 years of experience in construction estimating, engineering, or a related construction role. Co-op terms, internships, and summer field experience count - recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
· Post-secondary education required: diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
· Working knowledge of, or a demonstrated interest in learning:
o Sewer, Watermain & Stormwater - municipal underground infrastructure, pipe materials (PVC, concrete, ductile iron, HDPE), mainline trenching, manholes, catch basins, valves, hydrants, culverts, and stormwater management works; exposure to OPS and municipal standards is an asset.
o Earthworks - site grading, excavation, backfilling and compaction, cut-and-fill concepts, contour and grading plans, haul distances, material disposal, erosion control, and reading geotechnical reports.
o Roadworks & Topworks - subgrade preparation, granular base installation, asphalt paving, curb and gutter, sidewalks, multi-use paths, traffic control, pavement markings, and final surface restoration.
· Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications; formal blueprint reading coursework is an asset.
· Proficiency in Excel and MS Word. Exposure to Bluebeam, AutoCAD, or Primavera is an asset - training will be provided.
· Strong numerical accuracy and attention to detail. A missed quantity or a transposed figure carries real cost consequences, and care matters more than speed at this stage.
· Certifications - none are required at hire, and we support staff in pursuing:
o Certified Engineering Technician (C.Tech) or Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) - OACETT
o Gold Seal Certification in Estimating - Canadian Construction Association
o WSIB Health & Safety Awareness Training (Ontario)
o Working familiarity with Ontario Provincial Standards (OPS) and the Ontario Building Code (OBC)
· Strong interpersonal skills - works effectively in a collaborative, team-based environment.
· Willingness to ask questions early, accept direction, and act on feedback.
· Demonstrated initiative, problem-solving ability, and accountability for results.
· Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
· Strong organizational skills to manage competing priorities and meet strict deadlines.
· Ability to work effectively under pressure, particularly in the days leading up to a tender closing.
· Valid Ontario driver’s licence and the ability to travel to project sites as required.
Compensation & Benefits:
· Salary range: $75,000 – $90,000 annually (based on education, relevant experience, and qualifications)
