Tarra Engineering & Structural Consultants Inc.
Location: Markham, Ontario, with project site visits as required
Employment type: Full-time, permanent
Tarra Engineering & Structural Consultants Inc. provides structural and geostructural engineering, instrumentation, and monitoring services. We are seeking an experienced engineer with a strong background in shoring and excavation support design to join our team in Markham.
In this role, you will develop practical, constructible engineering solutions and support projects from design through construction. You will work closely with clients, contractors, engineers, drafting staff, and our monitoring team, while providing technical guidance to junior engineers.
What you will do
- Design shoring and earth retention systems and prepare calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
- Evaluate appropriate systems, including soldier piles and lagging, secant and contiguous pile walls, sheet piles, micropyles, diaphragm walls, tiebacks, and internally braced excavations.
- Review geotechnical reports, surveys, utilities, and adjacent structures to establish design assumptions and identify site constraints.
- Assess earth and groundwater pressures, surcharge loads, construction sequencing, structural capacity, stability, and anticipated movements.
- Coordinate with drafting staff and project stakeholders to produce clear, complete deliverables and resolve design and constructability issues.
- Respond to technical inquiries, review relevant shop drawings and proposed changes, and conduct site reviews during construction.
- Collaborate with Tarra’s instrumentation and monitoring team on monitoring requirements and observations that may affect the design.
- Estimate design effort, manage assigned budgets and schedules, and communicate scope changes, technical risks, and resource needs.
- Review calculations and drawings, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to design standards and quality review procedures.
What you bring
- A bachelor’s degree in civil, structural, geotechnical, or a related engineering discipline.
- At least seven years of engineering experience, including demonstrated hands-on experience designing shoring and excavation support systems.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario.
- Strong knowledge of earth retention, soil–structure interaction, structural analysis, and construction sequencing.
- Ability to apply relevant codes, standards, and project requirements using appropriate engineering analysis and design software.
- Strong knowledge of Metrolinx and TTC design requirements and technical review processes.
- Sound engineering judgment, including the ability to document design assumptions and identify when specialist input or additional review is needed.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to explain technical issues clearly to clients, contractors, and colleagues.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and attend project sites as required.
Additional assets
- Experience with underpinning, foundations, temporary works, or complex urban excavations near existing structures and infrastructure.
- Experience designing utility support systems and supporting their installation.
- Experience coordinating instrumentation and monitoring requirements, interpreting movement data, and supporting construction-stage design reviews.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers and contributing to proposals or fee estimates.
- A valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence.
