Original job description

At Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), we are deeply committed to safety and passionate about making Ontario a safer place to live, work and play. As one of Ontario’s public safety regulators, established by the provincial government, our team of more than 450 professionals administer safety regulations and enhance public safety across multiple sectors - boilers and pressure vessels and operating engineers; elevating devices, amusement devices and ski lifts; and fuels. Our people are our greatest asset and every role is vital to our vision of working together for safer communities - today and tomorrow.

At TSSA, inspectors make a difference for Ontarians every day. Out in the field, you’ll connect with regulated parties and help them meet safety requirements through your expertise and education initiatives. Your work builds trust, enhances compliance, and strengthens the systems that keep people safe. You will have a direct impact on public safety across the province, supported by a professional, collaborative, purpose-driven team.

Your Key Contributions:

Promote Public Health: Conduct inspections of fuel facilities, equipment and other regulated sites to confirm compliance with the Technical Standards and Safety Act and its associated regulations.
Respond to Safety Incidents: Attend and inspect incidents involving fires, explosions, carbon monoxide exposure, and public complaints to determine root causes and recommend actions that reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
Support Compliance Outcomes: Issue orders and provide guidance to stakeholders based on the interpretation and application of fuels regulations, codes, and standards.
Maintain Accurate Regulatory Records: Document inspection findings, incident details, and compliance data in TSSA systems to support risk-based decision-making and accurate reporting.
Contribute to Consistent Service Delivery: Plan and schedule daily inspection activities, prepare reports within established timelines, and support audit inspections in accordance with standardized procedures.
Engage Industry and the Public: Provide clear, timely information to certificate holders, contractors, and members of the public to build awareness of regulatory requirements and encourage safe practices.
Support a High-Performing Team: Share technical knowledge, participate in training activities, and collaborate with colleagues to promote a cooperative and safety-focused work environment.

Your Qualifications & Key Strengths:

Certifications in Progress:

Actively pursuing or currently holding relevant fuels certifications, with a minimum qualification of Gas Technician (G2). Additional certifications are considered an asset including Oil Burner Technician (OBT2), Liquid Propane or Petroleum Mechanic (PMH/PM2/PM3).
Maintain or work toward the technical endorsements needed to inspect regulated fuels equipment in accordance with applicable codes and standards.

Technical Background:

Bring at least five years of experience in the gaseous fuels industry, supported by a strong working knowledge of the Technical Standards and Safety Act and associated fuels regulations (210/01, 212/01, 213/01, 215/01, 216/01, 217/01).
Demonstrate proficiency with fuels-related codes and standards, including CSA B149 series, the Liquid Fuels Handling Code, and CSA Z662 for oil and gas pipeline systems.
Apply strong analytical skills when conducting inspections, completing incident investigations, determining root causes, and assessing risks within regulated environments.
Use business systems to document findings, maintain accurate compliance records and support consistent service delivery.

Travel Requirements:

Daily travel required; therefore, a valid Ontario Class G driver's licence and a driving record suitable for fieldwork are essential.

Helpful Information That Matters:

Hiring Range Details: As a unionized role represented by Ontario Public Service Employees Union, this position offers competitive wages as outlined in the collective agreement. For full details, visit OPSEU and TSSA Collective Agreement.
