Communications Officer, Social Media
Permanent part-time (0.6 FTE) position

The Opportunity
Reporting to the Communications Manager, the Communications Officer works collaboratively within the Government, Communications team to enhance the ATA’s communication approaches and overall engagement with internal and external audiences. Responsibilities and portfolios may shift according to changing operational needs; however, the incumbent is required to research, plan, develop, implement and evaluate communications strategies and audience outreach success when shaping and delivering key messages that promote ATA’s initiatives, programs, services and events. Specific responsibilities include the following:
- Managing the ATA’s social media presence and analyzing social media metrics with a view to guiding future social media campaigns
- Planning, editing and creating engaging content for the ATA’s social media channels, with a priority for ATA campaigns and emergent issues
- Monitoring social media analytics and using the results to improve content
- Developing and implementing social media strategies for member engagement for major ATA events such as Provincial Executive Council elections and bargaining
- Implementing and maintaining the ATA’s LinkedIn through leadership
- Monitoring social media channels to identify misleading, incorrect or harmful information being disseminated about the ATA, the membership or public education
- Developing social media guidelines and strategies for use by ATA staff, leaders and subgroups
- Producing news articles for the ATA News
- Taking photographs at events as required
- Providing backup to the other Communications Officers as required
- Providing support as required for meetings, committees, conferences and other departmental activities.
Qualifications
- A diploma in communications or equivalent education and experience
- Three to five years of experience in communications, with at least one year in a social media role or setting (equivalencies will be considered)
- Experience writing for multiple social media platforms
- Experience utilizing various mediums of communication, including social media (X, Facebook, Instagram and others), public facing websites, SharePoint sites and Microsoft Teams
- Competency in developing quick and engaging content for social media, including photography, graphics and short videos
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, Canva and other related media design software platforms
- Knowledge and understanding of current trends in digital and social media
- Solid understanding of copyright and privacy legislation
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate to diverse audiences using inclusive language approaches
- Strong organization and project management skills with high standards and an attention to detail
- Ability to multitask, prioritize work assignments and collaborate effectively
- A strong sense of diplomacy, tact and risk management when working with external and internal stakeholders
- Able to drive to events occasionally and work irregular hours during times of emergent communication needs
- Experience with NationBuilder and a working knowledge of basic HTML are assets
- Experience working in a member-driven association is an asset
- Ability to communicate in written and spoken French is an asset
