PURPOSE OF POSITION
Due to a vacancy, the Municipality of Grey Highlands is pleased to invite applications for the position of “Casual Waste & Diversion Site Attendant”. Reporting to the Waste & Diversion Team Lead, the successful candidate will perform duties in accordance with departmental and corporate work plans and priorities. This casual part-time position is up to 24 hours per week, worked in 8-hour shifts, and requires regular outdoor work and weekend availability.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Directing and assisting the residents as they enter the Waste and Diversion Site to ensure materials are placed in the appropriate areas; rejecting unacceptable items as prescribed by the Waste Recycling and Diversion By-Law 2023-084; documenting quantity and type in the applicable record.
- Performing general operational and administrative duties (opens and closes WDS, Contractor Waste Authorization Forms, Bag Tags, keeps all records and daily logs).
- Issuing, collecting, and recording financial transactions with high level of accuracy (bills, invoices, payments, receipts, reconciliation, and resident traffic).
- Maintaining general upkeep of WDS in neat condition (clearing debris and litter, etc.).
- Taking reasonable precautions and actions to mitigate risks to users and ensure a safe environment for staff and residents.
- Performing other duties as assigned in accordance with corporate objectives.
Develops and maintains good working relationships with Council, staff and the public which includes:
- Complying with all office policies and procedures.
- Attending meetings and training when required.
- Participating in resolution of delivery service issues.
- Communicating ideas, suggestions, and procedural changes which may assist the organization.
- Assisting where and when needed during staff shortages and/or emergency situations.
- Responds and/or redirects resident inquiries and/or complaints to supervisor.
Responsible, as an employee, for health & safety under the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA). This includes, but is not limited to:
- Working safely within the law and safe work practices/procedures (understanding and following standard operating procedures, wearing personal protective equipment, using MSDS information, ensuring all guards are in place, when applicable)
- Immediately reporting unsafe acts, conditions, or contraventions of the OHSA to a supervisor, the JHSC, or a Health & Safety representative.
- Maintaining a clean, orderly work area and avoiding any unsafe or disruptive behavior in the workplace.
- Completing all assigned health and safety training and taking the health and safety of themselves and others seriously by following workplace safety policies, procedures, and instructions.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- OSSD (Grade 12) or currently working towards completion of OSSD.
- A minimum of one (1) year experience in a customer service role.
- Valid G Driver’s License
- A working understanding of all applicable legislation, Environmental Compliance Approvals, By-laws, and policies related to solid waste and diversion operations.
- Ability to interpret, apply and explain waste, diversion and recycling laws and codes.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment and initiative when dealing with coworkers, supervisors and residents.
- Ability to provide timely and courteous customer service.
- Good judgment and initiative and the ability to follow direction.
- Must be able to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Basic computer literacy and Microsoft Office skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work occurs at Waste and Diversion Sites with a high degree of resident contact. There is a substantial amount of heavy lifting and carrying in all weather conditions including the summer and winter. A high degree of mental alertness is required to ensure the safety of self and others as working near heavy equipment, vehicles, and tools is required. There is a high risk of exposure to various risks such as dust, smells, broken glass, and sharp objects, as well as the potential for slips when moving items. Schedule will include weekend shifts.
