The Town of Blackfalds is seeking a motivated, safety-focused, and experienced
Public Works Operator II to join our Public Works team. The Public Works Operator II position plays a key role in the maintenance and operation of municipal roads, sidewalks, water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, stormwater infrastructure, fleet equipment, and other municipal assets.
Reporting to the
Public Works Foreman, the successful candidate will operate a variety of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment while contributing to the delivery of reliable municipal services for our growing community.
The Public Works Operator II performs a variety of operational, maintenance, and infrastructure-related duties, including:
- Maintenance and repair of municipal roadways, sidewalks, water distribution, sanitary sewer, and stormwater systems.
- Operation of light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks and equipment.
- Hydrant inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
- Asphalt patching, crack filling, concrete repairs, and roadway maintenance activities.
- Traffic and street sign installation and maintenance.
- Fleet and equipment servicing, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs.
- Completion of work orders, service requests, inspections, and related documentation using computerized systems.
- Participation in solid waste operations and other municipal public works activities.
- Participation in an on-call rotation for after-hours and weekend emergency response.
- Strong understanding of occupational health and safety practices and legislation.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum four (4) years of municipal public works experience.
- Heavy Equipment Certification.
- Small Water System Operator Certification from Alberta Environment.
- Valid Alberta Class 3 Driver's Licence with Q Endorsement and acceptable Driver's Abstract.
- Standard First Aid with CPR/AED Level C
- RCMP Criminal Record Check
- WHMIS and Confined Space certifications, or the ability to obtain and maintain required certifications.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of municipal infrastructure maintenance and repair practices.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety and hazard assessment procedures.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions.
- Experience operating heavy equipment safely and effectively.
- Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, contractors, and the public.
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
- Computer proficiency for email, timesheets, and work order systems.
This position involves working both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Duties include lifting, carrying, climbing, kneeling, standing, walking, and operating equipment. Employees may be required to work in confined spaces and around municipal utility infrastructure.

Hours of Work: 80 hours bi-weekly.
Schedule: Winter schedule consisting of
10 days on / 4 days off
Starting hourly wage for the Public Works Operator II is $35.49 / hour as per the CUPE Local 417 Collective Agreement 2025-2027.
