The Town of Devon is seeking a dependable, hardworking, and community-minded individual to join our Parks & Open Spaces team as a Casual Labourer.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in maintaining public spaces, and values contributing to their community. As part of our team, you will help maintain parks, trails, sports fields, playgrounds, landscaped areas, and other municipal amenities that residents enjoy every day.
What You'll Do
Parks & Grounds Maintenance
- Maintain parks, sports fields, playgrounds, trails, landscaped areas, and other municipal properties.
- Perform mowing, trimming, vegetation management, litter collection, and general grounds maintenance.
- Assist with planting, beautification, and seasonal maintenance activities.
- Help keep public spaces safe, clean, and well-maintained.
Facilities & Operational Support
- Assist with inspections, minor repairs, preventative maintenance, and upkeep of park amenities and municipal assets.
- Support seasonal facility and infrastructure start-up and shutdown activities.
- Assist with snow and ice control operations as required.
- Operate equipment, tools, and vehicles used in parks maintenance activities.
Community & Event Support
- Assist with community events, festivals, recreational activities, and special projects.
- Provide professional and courteous service to residents, user groups, contractors, and visitors.
- Respond to routine inquiries and communicate concerns to appropriate staff.
Safety & Teamwork
- Identify and report hazards, maintenance concerns, and operational issues.
- Follow all Town policies, safe work procedures, and Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
- Work collaboratively with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and other Town departments.
- Support a positive, respectful, and team-oriented work environment.
Qualifications & Experience
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's Licence.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather and environmental conditions.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment.
Assets
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
- WHMIS Certification.
- Experience working in parks, landscaping, grounds maintenance, construction, agriculture, or municipal operations.
- Experience operating light equipment and tools.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and experience using hand and power tools.
Previous experience is considered an asset; however, training will be provided to the successful candidate.
Working Conditions
This position is primarily performed outdoors and requires:
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
- Working in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, and uneven terrain.
- Operating equipment, tools, and municipal vehicles.
- Availability for evening, weekend, statutory holiday, and special event shifts as required.
This position is designated as safety-sensitive and requires sound judgment, situational awareness, and strict adherence to safe work practices.
Compensation
$21.96 to $26.23 per hour, based on qualifications and experience.
