POSITION SUMMARY:
Build your engineering career at the intersection of technology, automation and pipeline operations. This one-year contract offers hands-on experience with SCADA, PLCs, industrial networks, field instrumentation, programming and control systems, while contributing to real-world projects that support safe, reliable and efficient pipeline operations.
Reporting to the Manager, Process & Automation Engineering, the Engineer in Training (EIT), Control Systems is a safety-responsible role supporting the reliability and operational readiness of Industrial Control Systems (ICS). Working alongside experienced engineers and operational teams, you’ll apply your engineering and programming skills to system troubleshooting, automation projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support the monitoring, maintenance and operational readiness of Industrial Control Systems, including industrial networks, PLCs, SCADA, HMIs and field devices supporting 24/7 pipeline operations.
- Apply engineering principles and programming skills to troubleshoot system issues, improve reliability and support the ongoing performance of control systems and related subsystems, including leak detection and measurement.
- Assist with the design, review and implementation of control system solutions, including control narratives, drawings, instrument and device specifications, network architecture, PLC logic and HMI programming.
- Support field troubleshooting of PLCs, pressure transmitters, RTDs, flow meters, pumps, valves and communications equipment, working alongside senior engineers, field technicians and operational personnel.
- Monitor and assess ICS performance through system health checks, reports and performance measures, identifying issues and opportunities for improvement.
- Assist with implementing approved system and field changes through the Management of Change (MOC) process, ensuring changes are appropriately assessed, documented and implemented.
- Provide technical support to Operations and Field Services in response to incidents, maintenance activities, operational concerns and improvement opportunities, escalating issues and supporting timely resolution under senior engineering guidance.
- Assist with responding to operational emergencies, applying critical thinking and sound decision-making while working under the direction of senior engineers.
- Support the planning and execution of ICS, automation and minor facility projects, including preliminary design, budgeting, scheduling, documentation, stakeholder coordination and assigned scope execution.
- Assist with project reviews and technical assessments to ensure proposed solutions meet applicable codes, regulations, company standards, engineering practices and operational requirements.
- Conduct preliminary technical analysis and support risk assessments, incident investigations and corrective actions, helping identify, categorize and prioritize operational and engineering risks.
- Assist with diagnosing data communication and telemetry issues, coordinating with network providers, senior engineers and field personnel to minimize disruption to pipeline operations.
- Maintain and update SCADA displays, databases, drawings, manuals, procedures, software backups and other engineering records, ensuring documentation remains accurate and current.
- Support regulatory and business requirements by gathering technical information for CER and other regulatory submissions, developing scopes of work and assisting with contractor and tender packages.
- Research and evaluate new technologies, equipment and software upgrades applicable to pipeline automation, supporting technical studies, preliminary cost estimates, business cases and continuous improvement initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must-haves (minimum requirements):
- Two years of relevant engineering experience, preferably in control systems, automation, SCADA, PLCs, industrial networks or a related technical environment.
- Post-secondary education in Electrical, Computer, Automation and Instrumentation, Control Systems or a related Engineering discipline.
- Strong interest in industrial automation, control systems, SCADA, PLCs and programming.
- Collaborative team player with strong communication skills and the ability to ask clarifying questions and communicate openly.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate technical issues and develop practical solutions.
- Programming experience and the ability to understand, develop or troubleshoot control-system logic and applications.

- Strong safety mindset to guide decision making.
- A valid driver’s licence.

Preference for:
- Familiarity with industrial networks, communications protocols, instrumentation, telemetry and/or HMI systems.
- Hands on PLC and Process Control Programming.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
- This is a temporary position for a period of 1 year with the potential for extension.
- This is a hybrid role, with an expectation to work in the office 2–3 days per week, based on business and operational needs. The role may also require occasional site visits in support of assigned projects.
- This position is based out of the Richmond Hill Office, located at 310-45 Vogell Road, Richmond Hill, ON.
- You will be required to perform some lifting of servers and computers.
