RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Develop RF engineering design projects by developing project concepts and objectives including demand criteria, coverage, and number of channels; preparing a project plan, including required resources, development timetables, cost estimates, and link budgets
- Identify short-term and long-term issues; qualify contractor and vendors
- Designs and constructs wireless systems by researching, analyzing, sectioning, and applying RF engineering techniques and criteria
- Enhances engineering and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
- Adapts and modifies engineering approaches and options as per organizational requirements
- Prepares maps, schematics and system documentation; configures systems; characterizes the path loss; calibrates the signal propagation model; develops a network simulation including traffic and loading analysis
- Selects and approves equipment
- Evaluates current technical processes and procedures, and develops processes based on requirements
- Prepares request for proposals and quotes
- Analyzes potential obstruction to air navigation, including obtaining determination of No Hazard from Transport Canada (TC)
- Determines and establishes RF engineering design specifications and safety standards
- Evaluates current design procedures, and sets standard procedures for design
- Proposes alternate plans and recommends the best alternative
- Other duties as required
RELATIONSHIPS
The RF Engineer reports directly to the Manager, Engineer. The incumbent also works directly with:
- Project Manager(s)/Project Coordinator(s)
- Service Department
- Sales Department
- Inventory Department
- Third Party Contractors
- Clients
AUTHORITY
The RF Engineer holds the authority to do the following:
- Determine RF coverage calculations
- Determine and select equipment specifications
- Develop and implement point to point link designs
- Ensure all rules and regulations concerning the practice of professional engineering are adhered to
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
The RF Engineer will work mainly in an office environment; however, travel to customer project sites will be required. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions may be a possibility. The incumbent must wear safety glasses and safety boots, as well as a hard hat and safety vest during site visits.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with a wireless communications focus plus 4 years of experience OR;
- A Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology and 6 years of focused wireless experience;
- Professional Engineering Certification (APEGA), P.Eng or P.L. considered an asset.
Experience and Training
- Experience in Industrial Telecommunication systems
- Related experience in Industrial IT systems deployment
- Networking experience that includes network design, operational support, hands on implementation and configuration of various network infrastructures would be an asset
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Operator’s License or equivalent

Physical Demands
The RF Engineer must be able to spend 90% of the day sitting or walking, and 10% standing. The incumbent will also be required to look at a computer screen for long periods of time. There is a possibility of eye and/or joint strain related to operating computer equipment.
