About Turkey Farmers of Canada
Turkey Farmers of Canada (TFC) is the national organization representing Canada’s turkey farmers. Established in 1974 under the federal Farm Products Agencies Act, TFC oversees the turkey supply management system in Canada, promotes turkey consumption and supports industry-wide cooperation. Our Board of Directors brings together provincial farmer representatives and processing sector members to guide national decisions on production, bird care, food safety, research and international trade.
About the Role
Maternity Leave Contract - Full-time: 12-month contract, with the possibility of an extension of up to six months (maximum total duration of 18 months).
TFC is seeking a Manager – Technical Affairs to cover an existing position during a maternity leave. Reporting to the Executive Director and collaborating with the Manager – On-Farm Programs, you will contribute to research, animal health and care, and policy initiatives supporting Canada’s turkey sector.
You will monitor scientific and regulatory developments, translate technical information into practical recommendations, and work closely with the provincial turkey boards, researchers, industry partners and government representatives. As part of a small, collaborative team, you will provide scientific and technical advice that supports TFC’s priorities and national decision-making.
The role is based in our Mississauga office, with a hybrid work arrangement.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee TFC’s research initiatives and implementation of its Research Strategy and provide technical and scientific support to the Research Committee.
- Monitor and analyze scientific, policy and regulatory developments related to bird health and care, biosecurity, food safety and antimicrobial use.
- Prepare recommendations, briefing materials and position statements to support TFC’s policies and priorities.
- Collaborate with the Manager – On-Farm Programs on the maintenance, revision and implementation of TFC’s On-Farm Food Safety and Flock Care Programs and related resources.
- Provide technical support on poultry disease issues, and related policy initiatives.
- Liaise with provincial turkey boards, industry organizations and government agencies, including the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Health Canada.
- Represent TFC on relevant committees and at industry and government meetings.
- Prepare reports, presentations and external communications, and provide scientific and regulatory guidance to TFC staff and Directors.
- Perform other related duties as reasonably assigned.
What We’re Looking For
Required:
- A university degree in poultry science, animal science, food science or a related field.
- Relevant work experience.[AP1]
- Strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to interpret scientific and technical papers and communicate their implications clearly.
- Knowledge of current food safety issues.
- Experience in project management and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear reports and present findings to diverse audiences.
- Strong interpersonal skills, professionalism and diplomacy when working with industry and government partners.
- Sound judgment, initiative and practical problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Availability to travel as required.
Assets:
- A master’s degree in a related field.
- Knowledge of the poultry industry or a related industry.
- Familiarity with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) principles and their application.
- Ability to speak, read and write fluently in French.
