Job Summary
As an Intermediate Piping Designer – PDS, you will contribute to the design and development of piping systems for energy and infrastructure projects from the Calgary, Alberta office. Working within multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will develop and maintain piping models, layouts, and design deliverables in accordance with project specifications, applicable codes, industry standards, and client requirements. This role involves coordinating piping design activities with other engineering disciplines, resolving design interfaces, and supporting the delivery of safe, efficient, and constructible engineering solutions throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Piping Design & 3D Modeling
- Develop and maintain 3D piping models using PDS and other applicable design tools in accordance with project requirements and established design practices.
- Prepare piping layouts, equipment arrangements, piping plans, sections, elevations, and detailed design drawings.
- Route piping systems based on process requirements, equipment locations, design specifications, and applicable codes and standards.
- Incorporate piping specifications, material requirements, line classifications, and design criteria into the model and associated deliverables.
- Apply appropriate design practices to address accessibility, operability, maintainability, constructability, and safety requirements.
- Identify and resolve routing conflicts, spatial constraints, and potential interferences within the piping model.
- Review and incorporate engineering markups, design changes, and updated project information into models and drawings.
- Support the development of piping isometrics, material take-offs, and other piping design deliverables as required.
Engineering Coordination & Interface Management- Coordinate piping design activities with process, mechanical, civil, structural, electrical, instrumentation, and other engineering disciplines.
- Participate in interdisciplinary model reviews, design coordination meetings, and clash detection activities.
- Identify design interfaces and resolve model discrepancies in collaboration with relevant discipline leads and project stakeholders.
- Incorporate equipment data, vendor drawings, piping specifications, and engineering inputs into the piping design.
- Communicate design constraints, technical issues, and potential schedule impacts to the appropriate engineering personnel.
- Support the resolution of technical queries and design changes throughout the project lifecycle.
Technical Documentation & Quality Assurance- Prepare, check, and revise piping drawings and model deliverables in accordance with project standards, client requirements, and established quality procedures.
- Ensure consistency between 3D models, piping drawings, line lists, equipment layouts, and related engineering documentation.
- Verify design information against applicable project specifications, engineering standards, and relevant industry codes.
- Conduct self-checks and incorporate review comments to maintain the accuracy, completeness, and quality of design deliverables.
- Maintain model integrity, drawing revisions, and design documentation in accordance with project document control procedures.
- Support design reviews, model audits, and quality checks to identify and correct discrepancies before deliverable issuance.
Construction & Project Support- Provide piping design support during engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases as required.
- Assist with the resolution of field inquiries, construction-related design issues, and requests for design clarification.
- Review field information, redlines, and as-built markups and incorporate approved changes into design deliverables.
- Support the preparation of design packages and documentation required for construction and project execution.
- Contribute to project progress by meeting assigned deliverable schedules, communicating workload requirements, and identifying potential design risks.
- Participate in lessons-learned activities and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance piping design quality and efficiency.
Qualifications & Skills- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Piping Design, Drafting, or a related technical discipline; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
- 4–9 years of relevant piping design experience, preferably within an engineering consulting, EPC, energy, oil and gas, petrochemical, power, or infrastructure environment.
- Practical experience developing and maintaining 3D piping models using PDS or comparable piping design software.
- Proficiency in preparing piping layouts, general arrangements, piping plans, sections, elevations, and isometric drawings.
- Understanding of piping systems, piping components, material specifications, line classifications, and equipment interfaces.
- Familiarity with applicable piping codes, industry standards, project specifications, and engineering design practices.
- Experience coordinating piping models with other engineering disciplines and participating in model reviews and clash detection.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, equipment layouts, vendor documentation, and technical specifications.
- Knowledge of constructability, accessibility, operability, maintainability, and safe design principles.
- Familiarity with piping material take-offs, design documentation, drawing revisions, and quality control procedures.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to identify and resolve design inconsistencies.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work within multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with engineers, designers, and project stakeholders.
- Ability to organize and prioritize assigned tasks, manage competing deadlines, and deliver accurate work in accordance with project schedules.
- Demonstrated initiative, accountability, and willingness to support less experienced team members and contribute to knowledge sharing.
- Familiarity with general engineering design software, office productivity tools, and electronic document management systems.
