The opportunity:
The University of Manitoba is looking for an Assistant Director, Operations & Maintenance for the Bannatyne Campus. This position will provide strategic and operational leadership for the delivery of campus facilities, infrastructure, maintenance services, and asset management programs. Responsible for overseeing maintenance operations, workforce planning, labour relations, budget and contract administration, and capital asset planning, the role ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of campus facilities while supporting long-term infrastructure sustainability. The position leads initiatives related to preventive maintenance, operational readiness, emergency preparedness, business continuity, and sustainability, while fostering employee development and operational excellence across diverse teams. As a key member of the Operations & Maintenance leadership team, the Assistant Director collaborates with internal and external stakeholders, supports complex operational decision-making, advances service improvement initiatives, and contributes to the effective stewardship of University resources and facilities.
The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:
- Formal education at a Master’s Degree level is required, professional development, or certifications in university management, operations management, facilities management, or human resource management are considered assets and support ongoing professional development.
- Professional designation as an Engineer and/or Certified Engineering Technologist in Electrical or Mechanical is required.
- Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or similar background is preferred.
- A minimum of 8 years directly related experience in facilities operations and engineering management with multi-disciplinary teams in a unionized environment is required.
- Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary teams in a unionized environment is required.
- Demonstrated project management experience, including stakeholder communication and human resource management is required.
- Experience managing facilities, budgets, financial variance reporting, forecasting, and project costing is required.
- Experience developing resource models and managing performance measure and KPIs within a complex organization.
- Extensive knowledge and experience in facilities management, asset life cycle costing, capital planning, and management of large real estate portfolios are required.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Strong multidisciplinary leadership and team building skills required.
- Strategic and tactical thinking within strong problem-solving capability is required.
- Superior interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills is required.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with managers, employees, clients, and stakeholders is required.
- Strong organizational, financial, and operational management skills required.
- Ability to plan, organize, direct, coordinate, and manage a complex operation and significant budget.
- Ability to analyze complex problems and develop practical, sustainable solutions is required.
- Ability to develop and implement effective procedures and operational practices is required.
- Ability to interpret and apply policies and collective agreement provisions is required.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and make sound decisions in high-pressure environments is required.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
- The role will require continual professional development and engagement with associations that promote best practice within the industry
- Involvement of staff in development of solutions and application of continuous improvement methodologies is essential.
